William & Mary Physics Department

William & Mary Physics Department The Physics Department at William & Mary combines a thriving research environment with excellence in graduate and undergraduate education. degree.

The department consists of thirty members on the instructional faculty, together with approximately fifteen additional physicists in purely research positions. Our undergraduate program offers a major and minor. Through our graduate program, students pursue a Ph.D. We have an active summer REU program. Research areas in the department include atomic, molecular, and optical physics, computational p

hysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and hadronic physics, high energy physics, and plasma and non-linear physics. Related research areas include accelerator physics (in cooperation with Jefferson Lab) and material characterization (in cooperation with NASA-Langley Research Center). The department also has strong links with the interdisciplinary Applied Science Department and Computational Science Cluster.

W&M Racing competed against large engineering schools such as: Johns Hopkins, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State, and very own sailed away from the competition.

The race was part of a national collegiate competition sponsored by the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Office of Naval Research.

Congratulations to our W&M Racing Team.

William & Mary Racing won the 2026 Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP) autonomous division

Congratulations to Dr. Ran Yang and the undergraduate students in her point-of-care lab!

Blending physics with applied science, the Engineering Physics and Applied Design (EPAD) program prepares students to tackle real-world challenges with innovative, hands-on solutions.

W&M's CDSP EPAD students built iRays, a pre-hospital neuro-triage device developed in partnership with Hampton Fire & Rescue.

AI & Environment: Speaker Event This Monday, May 20, 2026

Join Dr. Ran Yang (Physics) and Dr. Andrew Fisher (History & Environment and Sustainability) for "AI & Environment: Sustainable Conversations in Technology." We will discuss the impact of AI on healthcare, communities, and global ecosystems from our different disciplinary perspectives.

Description
Join the Office of Sustainability for an exciting, and important aspect of understanding the relationship between Sustainability and AI development. This speaker event will feature a conversation between Dr. Rang Yang and Dr. Andrew Fisher. Come hear their constructive conversations about the impact of AI on their differing spheres of work, and how they envision the environmental, cultural, and technological impacts of AI in healthcare, communities, and on global ecosystems.

Dr. Yang is a physicist and an electrical and computer engineer who currently works as a Teaching Professor of Engineering Physics. Dr. Yang’s primary research focuses on deploying artificial intelligence via edge computing for point-of-care medical devices. Dr. Andrew Fisher, a professor for W&M History and Environment & Sustainability program, focuses his study on Native American Studies, American West, and Environmental History.
