CPALs at W&M

CPALs at W&M We are the Community Partnership for Adult Learners aka CPALs, a student-run organization that offers free ESL classes for adults in Williamsburg.

We were founded in 2005 by a student at William & Mary. We are a student-run organization that offers FREE ENGLISH CLASSES for members of the local Williamsburg Community. CPALS evolved from a Hispanic Studies freshman seminar taught by Jonathan Arries with support from the Sharpe Community Scholars Program. Our classes are every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm during the fall and spring semesters

. We offer Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced classes as well as free childcare! Email us at [email protected] for more information.

Hello Learners,

It has been a long time since we were able to meet with you all, and it will be a long time, until we will meet in person, again. Still, our club is dedicated to helping you learn English. English is essential knowledge in the United States, and can be helpful when navigating through many countries. Knowing English will open up many opportunities for you, and CPALs is dedicated to making sure that we can do our part in that process.

We have created a plan for our Fall 2020 Learning Session, and would like you to join us for classes starting September 17th, 2020 at 7:00pm. Further, in this email you will find the steps that we are taking to make the Fall 2020 Learning Session possible, and additional information about changes being made to improve your learning experience.

Virtual Classes & Online Lectures
Our online lectures will be emailed every Tuesday at 12:00AM. These are videos of the teachers teaching that you should watch before class.

Virtual classes will be held every Thursday from 7:00-8:30 starting September 17th. Classes will be online using a conference video call on Google Meets! Email or FB Message us for the link!

You can use google meets on a computer, laptop, tablet, or phone through its own app or through the gmail app. If you have trouble understanding these instructions email us so that we can assist you!

Please fill out the form found in the following link, so that we can best prepare for this semester: https://forms.gle/M6mBReZnAJgNwEop9

Other New Things,

Progress Assessment:
Due to changes in how often learners will interact with teachers and tutors, we have decided to begin conducting voluntary progress assessments which will be used to help teachers track each learner’s progress. These assessments are only used to help teachers teach, it will not be used to define a learners’' abilities.

Conversation Partners:
This year tutors will work as conversation partners for learners, who chose to have one. A conversation partner will set up times to talk to their learner about whatever they decide through whatever medium they chose, whether that be phone, video call, or instant messaging. Conversation Partners will be announced on September 15, 2020.

Create a new survey on your own or with others at the same time. Choose from a variety of survey types and analyze results in Google Forms. Free from Google.

Hello everyone!

I hope you're all well. William & Mary has canceled all classes and activites for the rest of the day because of the incoming snow. Because of this, THERE IS NO CPALS CLASS TONIGHT.

We will continue with our normal class schedule next week.

Have a restful night off!

Happy (early) Thanksgiving! During our lesson tonight, we learned about the many histories of Thanksgiving. For some, Squanto saved the pilgrims and they celebrated with a 3-day feast, for others, it was a day to thank God for a safe journey to the Americas, and for others, it was a time of great sadness and genocide. Though the history of this holiday is more complex than we sometimes remember, today Thanksgiving is a time for family, giving thanks, and being grateful.

And of course... it's about the food! Tonight we ate pumpkin pie, stuffing, and mac n' cheese!

We also learned about the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade, neighborhood football games, and Lucy pulling the football out from Charlie Brown. All Thanksgiving classics!

What does your family do on Thanksgiving? And what's your must-have Thanksgiving food?
