William & Mary Philosophy Department

William & Mary Philosophy Department We think, we read, we write. We repeat. The study of philosophy lies deep in William & Mary's roots. The hard questions just seem to get harder.

The College's charter in 1693 called for a “perpetual College of Divinity, Philosophy, Languages, and other good Arts and Sciences” to be founded in the Virginia Colony. Over three centuries after the College's inception, the importance of an education in philosophy has only increased.

Good afternoon W&M Philosophy Alumni!

Our department has decided to launch a new series of programs for students called Philosophy IRL [in real life] in about two months, and we would love to bring you all into the loop.

Our first session is planned for April 25th in the History Library of James Blair Hall, likely at 4 PM, and will focus on how a philosophy degree translates into marketable job skills and resume boosters. We want to help students understand the practical applications of their studies and how to position themselves for future opportunities.

We would like to bring alumni in our community into this conversation, so our students can see how a philosophy degree translates in real life! If you are interested in helping us with this endeavor please email us at [email protected].

We can’t wait to hear from you!

Students are zooming for the last Philosophy Club this semester. They'll be talking about mortality as represented in the poetry of Sylvia Plath, David Budbill, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Margaret Atwood. What can their representations teach us about death and the body? Don't miss it! Contact the organizers to join in:
