A few days ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming Professor, poet, and translator Dr. Jeremy Paden to the Department of World Languages & Cultures! 🎉📚

Dr. Paden visited our Spanish classes and students at all levels got to practice their Spanish while we discussed poetry, history, translation, and the importance of studying multiple languages and cultures. It was a great experience for our students and a really enjoyable conversation for everyone involved.

A big thank you from Dr. Dennis and Ms. Marsh to Dr. Paden for spending time with us at UC—we truly appreciated the visit!

🎭💜💚💛 Mardi Gras / Carnaval at Whitley North!

On Tuesday, we visited Whitley North Elementary with a group of students for a service-learning project celebrating Carnaval traditions around the world. Our students led mini-presentations on Carnaval de Dakar, Carnaval au Québec, and Carnaval in Haiti—and they did an amazing job keeping the kids engaged, sharing cultural traditions, and teaching them a few French words along the way.

The best part? Seeing everyone have fun while learning—plus all the masks, creativity, and big smiles. Huge thanks to Mrs. Rice and Whitley North for welcoming us !

Our UC Spanish students : Diana Ziegler, Shi Riis, and Mckenzie Sullivan visited Mrs. Rice’s kindergarten class at Whitley North for another hands-on service-learning experience.
This time, we explored Christmas Around the World!
Students shared cultural traditions from Venezuela, Guatemala, Kosovo, and more, helping the kindergarteners discover how families across the globe celebrate the holiday season.
After learning together, everyone participated in a creative craft activity that brought these traditions to life. The kids were excited, engaged, and full of questions—and our UC students did an amazing job teaching and leading each group.
It was a joyful day of culture, learning, and connection.
Thank you to Mrs. Rice and Whitley North for welcoming us again!

🌼💀 Service-Learning Spotlight: Día de los Mu***os at Whitley North! 📚✨

Our UC Spanish students, led by Dr. Dennis, visited Mrs. Rice’s 5th grade class at Whitley North for a hands-on service-learning project. Together, we explored Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead)—a vibrant Mexican celebration honoring loved ones with color, music, and memory. Students shared cultural context and vocabulary, then guided a creative activity that brought the traditions to life.
The 5th graders were engaged, our students did a great job teaching, and it was a really good day of learning together. Thank you to Mrs. Rice and Whitley North for having us.
