A new $750,000 grant to William & Mary will help preserve our shared digital history for generations to come. The team will use AI to identify and preserve web resources referenced in U.S. television news — capturing valuable digital content before it disappears and making it available to future researchers, journalists and the public.

Alexander Nwala will develop AI models that automatically identify, archive and catalog web resources referenced in U.S. television news in a publicly accessible database.

What do healing wounds, cleaning polluted waterways and creating sustainable materials have in common?

They all rely on Bioengineering.

To help provide new pathways into one of science and engineering's fastest-growing fields, the William & Mary School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics is launching a new degree in Bioengineering in Fall 2027. The new program builds on W&M's tradition of interdisciplinary learning and will offer students:

🌎 Preparation for careers in biotechnology, medicine, environmental sustainability, advanced manufacturing and more
🔬 Hands-on engineering and laboratory experiences every semester
🧬 Research opportunities alongside faculty and the internationally recognized iGEM synthetic biology team

Bioengineers are helping develop next-generation medicines, manufacture sustainable materials, improve wastewater treatment, produce clean fuels and create technologies that support health care, conservation and national security.

Unlike traditional AI programs focused on building algorithms, this interdisciplinary degree prepares students to apply AI to real-world challenges while considering the ethical, organizational and societal questions that come with this rapidly evolving technology.

As the first major in Applied AI offered at a public university in Virginia, it is designed to complement virtually any field, equipping students to integrate AI thoughtfully and responsibly across business, government, health care, education, the arts and beyond.

William & Mary welcomed 80 high school freshmen and sophomores to campus earlier this week for the Virginia Space Grant Consortium Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology (BLAST) summer program!

Over three days, students experimented with hands-on STEM activities and demonstrations designed to expand access to high-quality STEM experiences. The BLAST program encourages students to explore their interests, gain insight into the wide range of STEM careers, and prepare for future academic and professional opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

We are proud to support programs like BLAST that ignite curiosity, foster discovery, and help build the next generation of STEM leaders.

📍 Main ceremony: Friday at 6 p.m. in Zable Stadium
🚶 Walk Across Campus begins at 5 p.m. from the Wren Yard
🕓 Gates & parking lots open at 4 p.m.
🎟️ Download tickets before arriving — internet and cell service may be limited
👜 Clear bag policy in effect for all attendees
👟 Wear lightweight clothing & comfortable shoes for the walk and ceremony
🌩️ If weather requires, the ceremony will move indoors to Kaplan Arena
