A historic first for Eastern's nursing program! 🩺💙

Nursing senior Beatrice Sierra has become the FIRST Eastern student selected for the prestigious Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship, a highly competitive program that selects just 35 nursing students annually from across the region!

As a member of Eastern's inaugural nursing cohort, Beatrice spent eight weeks at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, caring for pediatric oncology patients and conducting clinical research.

Her dedication and compassion also earned her the opportunity to continue at Connecticut Children's as a student nurse intern!

With Eastern's nursing program launching just two years ago, Beatrice's accomplishment is an exciting milestone for the University and a testament to what's possible for our future nurses.

👏 Congratulations, Beatrice!

🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🩷

Eastern's Foster Clock Tower is illuminated pink this month, bringing attention to a disease that remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 42,140 women in the U.S. will lose their lives to breast cancer in 2026. That's more than 115 women every day.

These numbers represent families, friends and loved ones whose lives have been forever changed.

By lighting our clock tower pink, Eastern recognizes those affected by breast cancer and the importance of continued awareness, screening and early detection!

These books have something in common: They've all faced censorship. ❌ 📚

Book censorship is a growing national debate, and Eastern Connecticut State University is bringing the conversation to campus.

During Banned Books Week, Eastern faculty, alumni and community experts examined the sharp rise in book challenges across the country, the debate over who decides what people can read and the consequences of restricting access to information.

“The number of books being censored has reached an all-time high since we first started these events almost 25 years ago,” said Eastern librarian Hope-Marie Cook.

From classrooms and libraries to prisons and broadcast media, the discussion explored the complexities of censorship, free expression and intellectual freedom.

Some VERY good visitors on campus this week. 🐶💙

Wellness Week was all about taking a break, recharging and prioritizing our well-being. With plenty of four-legged friends on campus and puppy yoga to wrap things up, we'd say it was a week well spent! 🐾

Research that could change how ALS is treated has an Eastern connection. 🧬 🔬

Marc Freeman ’93, an award-winning neurobiologist and director of the Vollum Institute at Oregon Health & Science University, is helping advance research into the processes behind ALS, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

His team's discovery of a protein involved in nerve fiber degeneration helped pave the way for an experimental drug now in human clinical trials focused on ALS.

But Freeman's journey to becoming a leading scientist began right here at Eastern, where faculty mentors introduced him to research and encouraged him to pursue a career he hadn't originally imagined.

Recently inducted into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Freeman returned to campus to share his discoveries and reflect on the professors who helped shape his future.
