Carefully building the prenatal bag—
first the stethoscope, gifted by family and friends.
Then the doppler.
The blood pressure cuff.

Pack the bag.
Step through the door.
Your first day of clinical apprenticeship.

Tomorrow, you begin again.

There is a rhythm to this work—
one that’s not learned all at once,
but over time.

Leopold’s maneuvers.
Fundal height.
Heart tones.
Hands learning to feel what cannot always be seen.

At first, it’s deliberate.
You think through every step.

And then, slowly—
it settles into you.

The repetition.
The movement from one home to the next.
The quiet return to the same skills, again and again.

Until one day,
your hands know.

This is how midwives are made.

Not in a single moment—
but in all the small ones that come before.

At
you don’t just learn the work.

You live it.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we honor the Grand Midwives whose hands delivered generations and whose clinical wisdom shaped American perinatal care — often without recognition, and in the face of systemic exclusion.

Their legacy lives on in today’s Black midwives who continue to advocate for and provide safety, dignity, and equitable, anti-racist care within their communities.

We believe that growing the next generation of midwives means investing in students who are rooted in the communities they serve.

We are committed to supporting Black student midwives, sharing scholarship resources designed to increase access to midwifery education, and amplifying efforts such as the which works to reduce financial barriers for aspiring midwives.

The legacy continues and so does the work.

✨ The secret that no one told student midwives: you don’t have to do it alone and you don’t have to do it all at once.

Balancing school, family, work, and self-care isn’t about being a superhuman—it’s about support, flexibility, and realistic expectations.

At NMI, we believe sustainable learning creates sustainable midwives.

Whether you’re already here—or just beginning to explore your options, know that we are here to support you.

Yesterday, we honored the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—a reminder that justice is not passive, and love is not neutral.

In this moment—when so many are feeling grief, fear, anger, and deep unrest—we are invited to ask: How will we channel what is stirred in us for good?

In midwifery and perinatal care, our answer matters deeply.

In the United States, BIPOC continue to experience the worst maternal and infant health outcomes—because of systems shaped by racism, discrimination, criminalization, and chronic underinvestment in communities. These inequities are not accidental. They are the result of policy and power.

Reproductive justice teaches us that the right to have children, not have children, and to parent in safe and thriving communities is inseparable from racial justice, economic justice, and liberation. Midwifery—when practiced with humility, accountability, and community partnership—has the power to be part of that liberation.

At National Midwifery Institute, we believe honoring Dr. King’s legacy means more than reflection. It means action. It means educating and supporting midwives who are prepared to stand with marginalized communities, to challenge harmful systems, and to provide care rooted in dignity, autonomy, and respect. It means listening to those most impacted and following their leadership.

May we take the emotions stirred in us—our sorrow, our hope, our determination—and use them to build something better for tomorrow.

May we continue the work of justice in birth, in bodies, and in communities.
