70° DEGREES AT THE SUMMIT OBSERVATORY!
We just broke a major streak up here on Whiteface Mountain! Today while temperatures & humidities are making for hot weather at lower elevations, our summit temperature sensor officially ticked up to 70°F for the first time in nearly ten months.
To put that in perspective, the last time we saw a 70F day at the observatory was back on August 15, 2025. That means we’ve wrapped up a 291-day streak of sub 70F temperatures.
As data keepers on the mountain, we pay attention to long-term patterns as well as individual seasons. While the 291-day period from Fall to Spring with temperatures remaining below 70°F is near average, the 15-year trend shows a gradual decline in the number of such days, suggesting a shortening cool season driven by a later onset of winter and/or an earlier onset of summer.
