Psychology is a basic and applied science, health profession, and undergraduate liberal arts major. The UNCW Psychology Department supports outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs. Our department is strongly committed to the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in the research process. Students work closely with our outstanding faculty as junior colleagues to investigate a wi

de variety of topics including basic brain processes, substance abuse & psychopharmacology, cognitive aging & dementia, traumatic brain injury, forensic psychology & mental illness in correctional facilities, and behavioral analytic approaches to developmental disabilities. There are many opportunities for students to participate in research and service. We’re excited to celebrate some incredible members of our community! 👏

🏆 Dr. Richard S. Pond, Jr. has received the CSE Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award for his outstanding dedication to student learning and excellence in the classroom.

🌟 Rachael McLoud-Brophy from the CSE Academic Resource Center has been honored with the CSE Staff Excellence Award for her impactful work supporting our students.

💐 We also want to recognize two remarkable faculty members as they retire:
Dr. Nora Noel (34 years) and Dr. Raymond Pitts (30 years). Their commitment, mentorship, and contributions have left a lasting mark on our department.

Congratulations to our outstanding students from the Spring 2026 Graduate 3-Minute Thesis Competition! 🎉

🏆 Taylor Lewis earned 1st Place for her dissertation, “Assessing and Guiding Visual Attending by Early Learners During Picture Book Reading.” Her work focuses on improving instructional methods to better support children experiencing learning difficulties.

👏 Caroline Knox received the Crowd Favorite Award for her master’s thesis, “Contingency Management for Wearable Biometric Device Adherence in Opioid Users.” Her research explores behavioral economic interventions in substance use populations.

We are incredibly proud of their hard work and achievements—join us in celebrating their success!
