UNCW EVS faculty Dr. Kgosi Velempini traveled to northern Botswana (Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta) earlier this summer to conduct follow-up field observations and interview stakeholders at both the grassroots and national levels of decision and policymaking on critical environmental and sustainability practices.

Dr. Velempini documented current environmental issues related to people-wildlife interactions, Community-Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM), ecotourism, indigenous and local knowledge, and sustainability practices in biodiverse ecosystems. He also compiled regulatory frameworks, including environmental education strategies and action plans, to support his upcoming research publications. On one particular interaction, he joined a dance for a traditional group in the Okavango Delta Beetsha Village, whose livelihoods are entirely connected to nature in this wetland area!

Dr. Velempini drove for the first time, alone, through Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and Bwabwata National Park to re-enter Botswana at the Okavango Delta. To learn more about his wildlife experiences, check out his EVS 448 Human Wildlife Conflict course ! 🐘🐘🐘🦏🦏🦏
