Grad of the day: Carina Hunter 🌎

Hi! My name is Carina Hunter and I’m graduating with my degree in Social Studies Education.

After graduation, I will be hopefully teaching in a local middle or high school. I have applied to both Woodford and Jessamine counties, but I’m still looking around. I also plan to strengthen relationships with the ones I love and reconnecting where I can. College and work have forced me to put my focus strictly into my degree; I look forward to making stronger connections. I’m going where God takes me and I’m excited for the next adventure!

My time at Asbury has strengthened my resolve and raised my standards for myself and others. I found myself and I believe I’ve grown into more of who God wants me to be, in confidence and have plans of how I want to grow in life.

Prof shoutout: Dr. Willian and Dr. Brockman for sure! Both have been great advocates for me. Dr. Willian has been super supportive and helpful during my entire time at Asbury. He has helped me through the highs and lows (literally). He is also not afraid to read and help me edit my “books.” I wouldn’t have felt as compelled to choose Asbury if it weren’t for Dr. Brockman. Her kindness has helped me stay strong in some harder times. My family lovingly knows her as “the parking lot professor,” since that’s where she first met me before I committed to Asbury. Her snacks and music tastes are also a lovely bonus!

Advice for Ed majors:
Communication is key. NEVER be afraid to ask for help or reach out when you’re unsure. Just that small step of saying “hey I’m a little lost on this...” can help propel you forward. But more importantly, support each other! I am the only senior secondary ed major. If I did not have my friends who were also Elem. ed, music ed, and art ed, I may not have made it through student teaching. Be flexible and understanding but keep each other accountable and hold each other up! A little goes a long way!

Grad of the day: India Owen ☁️

Hi! My name is India Owen. I am graduating with a degree in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in literacy.

This summer, I am returning to Hungary on a short-term mission trip through OMS and the Education Department, teaching English and Bible at a camp. Then, I hope to teach somewhere locally this fall.

I have been so blessed by my time at Asbury and in the SOE! My time here has helped me to grow in my faith and relationship with the Lord, brought me many dear friends and mentors, and through the example of each of my professors, has shown me what it means to love students and believe in them.

It is too hard to pick just one education professor, as they have all had such an impact on my life.

My professor shoutout would be all of the professors in the SOE here at Asbury! Thank you, each of you, for believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself, challenging me to step out of my comfort zone and do things I would never have imagined I could or would do, always being there for me, challenging me to grow deeper in my faith, and showing me Christ’s love. I am just so thankful for each of you!

One piece of advice I would give would be to be confident in who the Lord has made you to be and don’t compare yourself to others! You each have unique gifts and stories to bring to your students, and even if those gifts look different than others, the Lord will use you to reach, love, and bless students, maybe even students that only you can reach and connect with!
Also, be willing to take risks, make mistakes, and ask lots of questions! It is only from making mistakes and seeking help that you can really grow!

Grad of the day: Amelia Creech 🖌️

Hi! My name is Amelia Creech, and I am graduating with a degree in Art Education. I was hired as an Art Teacher at Anderson County Middle School and will start there in the fall. I am currently moving into an apartment in Harrodsburg.

Going to Asbury was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The community has had a huge, positive impact on me. Being in the Education program has been a great learning experience, and there is always someone willing to support you.

Prof Riel has been my biggest helper when it came to answering my questions. He is also the one who got me connected to Anderson County in the first place.

I advise any education majors to always reach out to their professors and to create a balance of work!
