I'm a bit behind on posting but ten of us birded the June1st Tues Bird Walk and got 42 species on a beautiful morning at the Canyon Lake South River Trail area. Maybe our favorite was seeing the singing Louisiana Waterthrush; a nice surprise and probably a late migrant. Northern-roughwinged, Barn and Cliff Swallows, Painted Buntings, White-eyed, Red-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireos, Yellow-crowned Night Heron and others made our day!

Howdy everyone, just a reminder that I will be leading a bird walk on Tuesday June 2nd, meeting in the parking lot of the Wimberley Community Center at 7:15AM. Look for the red RAV4 with the big antenna. We will then drive to our destination. The birding usually goes until 10:00 or 11:00, at which point we can depart or have an early lunch. The cost is $10 a person, being a WBS member is not required.
This month we will be going to the Guadalupe River Trail below Canyon Dam. Hopefully there will be a good number of birds concentrated near the river, and we may be lucky enough to find some late migrants. Target birds will be Yellow-throated Warbler, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Spotted Sandpiper, Painted Bunting, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Lark Sparrow, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Summer Tanager, and more.
A map to the location can be found here:
https://goo.gl/maps/ampsrZMAoGiG2y68A We should arrive around 7:45AM, and will park in the gravel lot south of the river.
My phone is 979-422-7061 if you need to contact me.
RSVPs are not required if you meet us at the Community Center, but they are appreciated. Please let me know if you plan to meet at the birding location. See you on Tues!

On this week's episode of Squawk Talk I'm talking all about showing chickens in a Chicken Show. I'm not talking a commercial broiler show, but a Fancy Chicken Show, either an American Poultry Assoc sanctioned show or a fun Backyard Show. Getting chickens ready to show is the same for either show. I also touch on re-introducing chickens to the flock after they've been separated for a show; it gets touchy especially with roosters! To wrap up the program I'm talking about a recent birding trip to AZ looking for Spotted Owls, etc. Tune in to the Archive Vault anytime this week https://www.kwvh.org/archive-vault 'Til next time, Happy Birding and send your questions and comments!

On my recent birding trip to Big Bend and the Hill Country we got all of the target birds including Colima Warbler, Golden-cheeked Warbler, Black-capped Vireo and others. At one point we spotted a cool vine and it turned out to be Dark Star Milkvine (Chthamalia atrostellata).
Dark Star Milkvine has a Global Conservation Status of S1?, meaning it’s critically imperiled. This is its fourth documented locality in the world and with very few remaining individuals (fewer than 1,000), this plant is teetering on the edge of extinction. We spotted it in an area that I had special permission to go bird.

The 2nd window opens tonight for the Nightjar Survey Network, running May 23 - June 8. Mom & I started doing this when I was 10 or 11 years old. It's fun and it's good Citizen Science! Consider participating if we get a clear night in the next few weeks!

Nightjars are a family of birds that forage for flying insects at night. Many of these species are migratory, with the Common Nighthawk, for example, being found as far south as Argentina during the non-breeding season. These beautifully marked birds have long pointed wings for sustained flight, and...

Finishing up a great birding week in Big Bend; we did not get rained out! Among birds were Gray Hawk, Common Black Hawk, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, and YES, Colima Warbler! That one is always worth the hike altho we didn't even have to go all the up the "hill". Started out at 6am and saw it before 7!

This has nothing to do with birds, chickens, moths, astronomy or things I normally post about. But you know I'm also a sci-fi fan, so.... Mon is Memorial Day and we should all honor the men and women who gave their lives serving our country. But it also happens to be Towel Day this year. So proudly carry your towel when you go to your Memorial Day celebrations!

Towel Day is an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952-2001). On that day, fans around the universe carry a towel in his honour.

This week's episode of Squawk Talk can be heard any time this week in the Archive Vault, and I'm sharing about my recent big birding tour around TX. What is the SECRET bird we saw up close, that we couldn't even list on eBird because of it's super protected status? Listen to find out! https://www.kwvh.org/archive-vault
