Biology Professor Emeritus Neal Mundahl published a paper “Driftless Area Streams in Karstic Agricultural Watersheds: Best Management Practices, Biotic Integrity, and Environmental Stressors” in the Journal of Watershed Ecology. The paper reported on a multi-year assessment of the physical, chemical, and biological health of streams in the Whitewater River and Garvin Brook/Rollingstone Creek watersheds in southeastern Minnesota. Despite long-term efforts to lessen the impact of human activities on streams in these watersheds, many stream reaches continue to be listed as impaired waters due to excessive turbidity, high bacteria levels, and poor aquatic community health.
