For the third consecutive year, Master of Science in Management students in Dr. Douglas Johnson’s Managing People and Organizations course put into action, building beds for children in need through the local nonprofit A Bed and a Book.

A Bed and a Book has partnered with on several occasions, and we’re always grateful to welcome them to Farrell Hall for a day of meaningful service. Once assembled, the beds are delivered, along with bedding and hand-selected books, to children in the community.

In addition to building beds, students were tasked with fundraising to support the nonprofit. Collectively, they raised more than $12,000 through their efforts. At the conclusion of the experience, students reflected on how these hands-on exercises strengthened their ability to manage and lead people and organizations.

faculty, staff, and a team from Allegacy Financial, also joined in the bed building, and in total, 32 children will receive a bed built right here at Farrell Hall. Thank you to our partners, including the Allegacy Financial Center for Leadership and Character, for helping make this day such an incredible success!

Last week, Dean Norma R. Montague shared her expertise beyond the School of Business, delivering the keynote address to faculty colleagues at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine during its 2026 Curriculum Retreat, hosted by Nicholas D. Hartman, MD, MPH, Professor of Emergency Medicine and Interim Senior Associate Dean for Curriculum, who introduced Dean Montague for her keynote address.

Her presentation, titled “Teaching for Learning: Engagement. Belonging. Growth.,” explored how inclusive teaching creates the conditions that help every learner thrive.

A few ideas she shared focused on ways to:

• Create environments that foster engagement and belonging — from reading the room to reframing “office hours” as “student hours.”

• Challenge students to cultivate growth: “If it does not challenge you, it will not change you.”

• Teach across learners with different backgrounds and motivations, paying attention to each student as an individual whenever possible to support meaningful growth.

Her closing reflection is one worth keeping top of mind: What conditions am I creating to enable learning?

We value opportunities for the School of Business to learn from and engage with faculty colleagues across the University and to contribute our expertise to conversations about teaching and learning.

During his recent visit to the Wake Forest University School of Business, former Secretary of the Army, the Honorable Dan Driscoll, spoke with the community about personal experiences that have shaped his outlook on leadership, the importance of building trust and the values of a good leader, as well as individuals who have shaped his personal and professional journey.

Among his reflections, Driscoll shared two qualities he believes are key for the rising generation as they step into leadership roles: the drive to make a difference wherever they are and assuming the best intentions of those around them.

We’re grateful for the time Driscoll shared with the community and for the wisdom he emphasized: that a good leader leaves goodness wherever they go. We're additionally grateful to Allegacy Financial Center for Leadership and Character at , to the Department of Military Science, and to Professor Ben King, who organized and spearheaded this impactful visit!
