Wake Forest PA

Wake Forest PA Preparing highly capable, compassionate PAs who deliver patient-centered care since 1969. Campuses in Winston-Salem & Boone, NC.

The Wake Forest PA program is unique for its emphasis on active learning. We use small group, problem-based learning to inspire and support curiosity, integration, leadership, and self-reflection as students build their knowledge and skill bases. Through small groups, students interact with patient cases based on real-world medical problems, then break to research answers to questions or knowledge

gaps identified during the case study. This inquiry-based learning process has been shown to assist with development of clinical reasoning skills necessary for the ever-evolving world of clinical practice. We are one of the few programs in the nation with an educational experience focused on adult and applied learning principles. Our 24-month curriculum prepares students to practice successfully in all areas of medicine, from primary care to sub-specialities and surgery. Two exceptional locations…

Winston-Salem Campus

The PA program’s Winston-Salem campus is located in Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, one of the fastest-growing urban-based districts for innovation in the United States. The Innovation Quarter is home to five leading academic institutions, more than 1,500 degree-seeking students and more than 150 companies. It is a place for education, research and business.

525@Vine, the PA program’s location in Innovation Quarter, is a rehabilitated R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company building that also houses two other School of Medicine departments/degree programs: Nurse Anesthesia and Public Health Sciences. The School of Medicine’s MD program is next door. Outside 525@Vine is Bailey Park, a citywide destination for concerts, movie nights, outdoor yoga, cycling/running races and other events. Also in Innovation Quarter is Bailey Power Plant, a downtown landmark with retail, dining and entertainment venues. Our vibrant home features approximately 800 apartments and condominiums within or close by the Innovation Quarter. Boone Campus

Our Boone campus opened in 2014 and is the most western PA program in the state. The campus is a unique private-public partnership between Wake Forest School of Medicine and Appalachian State University. One objective of the campus is to train primary care PAs to help address the critical need for health care providers in rural and underserved communities of North Carolina. The Boone campus is located in a new state-of-the-art facility, the Beaver College of Health Sciences. Beaver College is adjacent to Watauga Medical Hospital and enables more collaboration and interprofessional education with other health care disciplines. Shared spaces include simulation labs, assessment areas and treatment rooms. These shared spaces reflect current medical practice of having multiple health care providers work together seamlessly for the best patient outcomes. Students on the Boone campus undergo the same education and training as students in Winston-Salem. All students graduate with a Master of Medical Science degree from Wake Forest School of Medicine.

-The Bowman Gray School of Medicine PA Program was founded in 1969.
-One of the first five PA Programs in the country.
-Our first class (8 students) graduated in 1971.
-Installed a new, problem-based learning, master degree curriculum in 2002.
-Became a department (Department of PA Studies) in 2006.
-Consistently ranked as a Top 10 program (US News and World Report).
-95% PANCE pass rate (national certifying exam) over the past 5 years.
-We use small group, problem-based learning to inspire and support curiosity, integration, leadership and self-reflection as students build their knowledge and skill bases.
-Through the small group cases, students interact with patient cases based on real-world medical problems, then break to research answers to questions or knowledge gaps identified during case study.
-This process is called ‘inquiry-based learning’ and has been shown to assist with development of clinical reasoning skills necessary for the ever-evolving world of clinical practice. EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM

Emerging Leaders Program-Business is a 34-month sequential degree program with the School of Business. Students first complete a 10-month Master of Arts in Management degree before earning a Master in Medical Science in PA Studies. ELP- Business seeks to create leaders for the PA profession who are equipped with high quality patient care skills in addition to business competencies to succeed in a complex health care environment. MMS/PhD DEGREE PROGRAM
The MMS-PhD is a 5- to 7-year sequential degree program that is offered in conjunction with the Wake Forest University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The student earns a Master of Medical Science in PA Studies after completing a PhD in Molecular Medicine and Translational Science (MMTS). This degree program targets students interested in clinical research, community research, and the translation of knowledge into improved human health. Graduates with the MMS-PhD will be basic scientists trained to function successfully in clinical environments and will have considerable professional flexibility. Clinical Year Prep (CYP) kicked off for the Class of 2027 last week!

One of the first skills workshops was Scrub, Gown & Glove, where students learned how to scrub up and stay sterile while putting on their gloves and gowns for surgery.

Workshops also include dos and don’ts for students while they are in the operating room, tips that can help them be a valuable part of the healthcare team during their surgical rotations and get the most from the experience. 🏥

Last Friday, the Department of PA Studies hosted a retirement celebration for Admissions Administrator Elise Gmuca.

For over 15 years, Ms. Gmuca facilitated applications, interviews, acceptances and matriculation for all incoming PA program students. She also managed countless other duties, including planning most of the commencements and student award ceremonies during her time with the department.

Many current students and alumni clearly remember when they got the call from Ms. Gmuca letting them know that they had been accepted to Wake PA. Colleagues reached out to alumni and collected dozens of those stories for a booklet titled “Where were you when Ms. Gmuca called?” They also created a photo book with pictures of Ms. Gmuca with staff, faculty, and students over the years.

Both these special collections of memories were presented to Ms. Gmuca at her retirement celebration, along with a grandparent membership to the North Carolina Zoo.

Friday’s festivities were emotional and bittersweet. We wish Ms. Gmuca a wonderful retirement with more time to spend with her husband, sons, and grandchildren, but we’ll greatly miss her presence, personality, and kindness.

Kelly Conner, PhD, MMS, PA-C ’16, Assistant Professor at Wake PA, was recently honored with the Wake Forest University School of Medicine 2026 Teaching Award!

School of Medicine Professor Roy Strowd, MD, MEd, MS, presented the award to Conner at the Health Professions Education Institute (HPEI) Conference in Charlotte.

This is the second year in a row that a Wake PA faculty member has received the award. Director of Didactic Education Toni Jackson, MMS, PA-C ’08, won in 2025.

Conner specializes in care for adult patients with epilepsy. In addition to her academic and clinical work, she strives to advance patient outcomes through research and advocacy, including serving on the National Professional Advisory Committee for the Epilepsy Alliance of America. At Wake PA, she teaches future PAs all about the brain and serves as director for the DMSc Capstone Course Series.

Earlier this year, Conner received the first-ever Neurology Department APP Education Award at the Neurology Faculty, APP, Resident and Fellow Retreat.

Conner was not the only Wake PA faculty member in the spotlight at the 2026 HPEI Conference. Chris Gillette, PhD, Director of Research and Scholarship for PA Studies, was a top abstract award winner, and Josh Waynick, MMS, PA-C ’14, Director of Curriculum Assessment and Technology for PA Studies, delivered the keynote with his research partners.

In late April, Wake PA teamed up with Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), Forsyth Tech Community College, and the Beaver College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University for an interactive Interprofessional Education Event (IPE).

Activities were hosted on both Wake PA’s Winston-Salem and Boone campuses. Students were divided into mixed-discipline teams and tasked with working through virtual escape rooms as they cared for a patient transitioning from acute care to in-patient rehabilitation to home care. Teams discussed crucial patient care topics related to each setting and helped one another learn more about the vocabulary and acronyms used in their disciplines with the “jargon jar.”

About 300 students participated, bringing together future health care professionals from multiple programs, including PA Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Healthcare Management, Healthcare Administration, Therapeutic Recreation, Speech and Language Pathology, Rehabilitation Counseling, and Social Work.

Wake PA, Forsyth Tech, and WSSU have been partnering on this event since 2020, starting online and transitioning to in-person in 2024. For the first time last year, Wake PA collaborated with the Beaver College of Health Sciences for the IPE in Boone.

Thanks to all the educators and students who came together for this great collaboration and learning experience!
