Salem College is pleased to welcome Darrell L. Farewell, CIA, CISA, as Salem Academy and College’s next chief financial officer and vice president of finance. He will begin his new role in September.

Darrell brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education, financial services, risk management and organizational operations. He joins Salem from Wake Forest University, where he serves as director of capital planning.

“Darrell understands that strong financial leadership is part of how we carry out our mission,” said President Jill Fleuriet. “He brings a thoughtful, practical approach to his work. He also understands higher education and the Winston-Salem community. I am very glad he is joining Salem.”

A Winston-Salem resident, Darrell is already active in the community through his service with the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, Allegacy Financial and Scouting America’s Old Hickory Council.

First Day of Classes called for a little celebration! 💙💛
We kicked off FDOC in the Student Center Plaza with plenty of first-day necessities, including first aid kits, can koozies, energy drinks, and slushies to cool off. But the real highlight? A build-your-own stuffie station with plenty of new friends to choose from! 🧸✨

Opening Convocation marks the start of a new academic year at Salem College. 💙✨
This year, we welcomed the class of 2030 and continued a longstanding Salem tradition as our newest students signed the Honor Code, joining generations of students who have done the same. Our seniors also put on their caps and gowns for the first time, marking the beginning of their final year at Salem College.

Today, we welcomed first-year students beginning their Salem journey and returning students coming back for another year. From packed cars and full carts to hugs, smiles, and plenty of helping hands, campus is already feeling like Salem again.

Athletics has officially moved in! 🏃‍♀️🏀

We were delighted to welcome our student-athletes to Salem College as they began their orientation. President Jill Fleuriet warmly welcomed them and wished them a successful and exciting year ahead! 💙

And now, President Fleuriet has two framed jerseys proudly displayed in her office, a special reminder of the Salem Spirit and the student-athletes who make our community so special!

For Kristin Henderson C'25, teaching was never just a career; it was a calling.
Through Salem College's Master of Arts in Teaching program and its partnership with Winston-Salem TEACH, Kristin found a community that challenged, supported, and prepared her to lead with confidence in the classroom.
Today, she's already making a difference as a fourth-grade teacher at Hall-Woodward Elementary School, and she has been recognized as Rookie Teacher of the Year.
"Keep going even when you feel like you want to give in. Continue to pursue everything that you have been called to."
Kristin's story is a reminder that remarkable educators begin with purpose, compassion, and a commitment to changing lives — one student at a time.

For more than three decades, Dr. John Hutton has inspired Salem students to see the world through the lens of creativity, curiosity, and history.
An accomplished art historian, illustrator, and professor, Dr. Hutton has illustrated more than 30 books, including President's Play, which was recently highlighted in a conversation featuring President Trump and Second Lady Usha Vance. Closer to home, he is also the creator, writer, and illustrator of Salem's beloved Sister Maus series, transforming a historic mouse hole in the Single Sisters' House into a story that has introduced students and visitors to Salem's rich history.
What drew him to Salem?
"I was really interested in working in a small place where you could get to know your students well."
Whether he's exploring Renaissance masterpieces, connecting art to medicine, or encouraging students to solve problems from new perspectives, Dr. Hutton believes a liberal arts education empowers students to think creatively in every field.
