Five leadership lessons. One memorable evening at Crummer.
Crummer alumni, students, prospective MBA candidates, and friends of the school recently came together for an evening of leadership, learning, and connection with Professor Mark Hertling, Lt. Gen., U.S. Army (Ret.).
Through personal stories, practical insights, and thoughtful conversation, Professor Hertling challenged us to think beyond leadership as a position—and instead consider how our character, actions, judgment, and ability to influence others shape the leaders we become.
Five ideas stood out:
1. Business is a human endeavor.
Successful leadership begins with understanding people, culture, communication, and relationships.
2. Leadership is both science and art.
Strategy, finance, technology, and systems are essential—but so are character, ethics, presence, and influence.
3. BE. KNOW. DO.
Who you are, what you know, and what you do must work together to create trust and results.
4. Leadership depends on context.
Effective leaders understand the people, organization, culture, and circumstances before determining how best to lead.
5. Character shapes destiny.
The values leaders and organizations practice ultimately determine what they become.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so meaningful.
Truly a night defined by connection, conversation, and Crummer community.
The Final Application Deadline to join our Fall 2026 MBA cohort is July 1.
