I want to share a story that illustrates the impact that persistence can have when a person has a dream and takes initiative. Avary Benavides Shefland was a high school student in a Mid-State Technical College EMT class that was held in Baraboo in the Spring of 2022. Avary graduated from BHS and attended Marquette University in pursuit of her nursing degree. While at Marquette, she spearheaded the effort to bring a student-run emergency medical service to Marquette University. Her dream became a reality when they ran their first call in April of 2026. While Avary is now graduated and working as an RN, she still plans to stay involved with the group for the time being. Congratulations Avary, you've made an impact that reaches far beyond what you may have thought your EMT class in high school would ever lead you to. Great work!

What started as a far-off dream quickly escalated into a passion project built to serve students for years to come.

Today we had 32 Firefighter 1 and 16 Firefighter 2 candidates successfully complete their certification testing. We also had a visit from a class of firefighter candidates from the Amherst Fire District that needed their entry-level firefighter live burn to complete their requirements for their class. Our instructors shifted gears from testing to teaching and got those students accommodated. They were also a great group and we congratulate them on completing their ELFF class. The weather was beautiful and everyone did a great job. A special thank you to our instructors for their hard work keeping everything moving and providing a fair and efficient exam. Your hard work is not unnoticed. Thank you also to our state representatives for their oversight of our exam. Students today were sponsored by the following agencies:

Practical fire testing tonight for Driver/Operator - Aerial and Fire Inspector. Aerial students were from Stevens Point FD, Plover FD, and South Area Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER). Fire Inspector students were from Stevens Point FD, Village of Biron FD, Town of Rome FD, Kronenwetter FD, and Rosholt FD. A big thank you to our instructional staff for getting this done tonight. Last Wednesday evening, 19 graduates of the 720-hour law enforcement academy were joined by family, friends, and agency representatives for their recognition ceremony. We applaud the camaraderie, professionalism, and teamwork that they all showed one another as they journeyed through their 18 week program. Stay safe out there and make us all proud as you protect the communities that you will call home.

The Emergency Medical Responder students in a class hosted at the Plainfield Fire Department received a visit and landing zone set-up and safety instruction from Life Link III on the last night of class.

37 students successfully completed their EMT psychomotor exam today. Some of them have already completed their cognitive exam and are just awaiting their license to be issued so that they can go to work. Good luck to all as they look forward to their next steps in their journey.
