This past Saturday the atmosphere in the classroom was electric as the women of PWYC gathered for the Admirals in Action seminar. This wasn’t your typical boating lecture; it was a focused, empowering session designed for one critical purpose: being prepared if the Captain suddenly goes down.
While we love being out on the water, true peace of mind comes from knowing exactly how to handle the “what-ifs” when you’re the one who needs to take charge.
Captain Myndi, who brought a wealth of wisdom specifically for the First Mate. Her tips were tactical and direct, focusing on the essential steps to keep the boat—and everyone on it—safe if the Captain is incapacitated.
Even though we were tackling serious scenarios, the room was filled with camaraderie and “giggles.” The absolute biggest laugh of the day came when we practiced inflating the life vest! There’s nothing like the sudden whoosh and “poof” of a life jacket to lighten the mood while learning life-saving skills.
The session was packed with practical tools to ensure we are never truly “lost” at sea:
Flares & Signals: We got hands-on experience with flares. Knowing how they feel and function in a classroom setting means no hesitation if you ever need to signal for help.
The Power of Three Words: We explored essential tech like the what3words app, which can pinpoint your exact location for rescuers, along with other useful navigation tools.
Describing Your Vessel: We practiced how to accurately describe our boats to first responders. In a crisis, being able to quickly relay your boat’s description and location is the fastest way to get help on the scene.
As we prepare to head back out on the water in the coming weeks, we do so with a new level of confidence. We’re heading into the season not just as passengers, but as prepared, confident partners on the water.
A huge thank you to “BoatMom” Captain Myndi for empowering us to be the ultimate safety net!
