Maverick Leadership

Maverick Leadership About the most innovative learning and training methodology currently employed by the US Army, Marine Corps and some law enforcement agencies.

The strategic approach and tactical techniques inherent in adapting Auftragstaktik will force and require major changes in the way the U.S. Army accesses, promotes, selects, educates, employs, builds its structures and trains its future forces and leaders. A good start is to broaden professional education – from initial-entry training to the top war-college level – to deal with the wide spectrum o

f issues that commanders will confront in in future complex environments. Fortunately, there are recent examples of how to do it. What the Army Reconnaissance Course (ARC) or USMA’s Department of Military Instruction (DMI) does for the tactical level can easily translate for operational and strategic level courses. But the dramatic change here is that adaptability had to begin at initial entry, not later when people are already set in their ways by the culture of conformity. Maverick Leadership provides proven methods on how to make quicker and better decisions through its 1-5 day workshops. Don Vandergriff is also a renown speaker having spoke at all the War Colleges, Staff Colleges, and to the House Armed Services, to several generals, Senators and Congressmen.

Thank you Thomas A. Kruegler for the call out! U.S. Army Moves To Mobilize And Disperse Its Increasingly Vulnerable Command Posts by

Loren Thompson

I read the typical Loren article. As always, it focuses on technological solutions which will mean it will fail, but will enrich contractors ran by retired senior officers. He lost it on me with this paragraph,

"Command posts are the nerve centers of maneuver warfare, continually sending and receiving intelligence, issuing orders to field units, and assuring that the movements of friendly forces are synchronized."

As John Boyd and others have written, and I have seen for real in hundreds of field exercises, war games, and in actual combat, you cannot have true Maneuver Warfare and Synchronization. As Boyd stated, "you can only synchronize watches."

I have been pushing for over two decades to replace synchronization with harmonizon or harmony. The latter word befits the tenets of Maneuver Warfare that we just wrote about in the New Maneuver Warfare Handbook, available on Amazon in kindle and hard copy from Special Tactics (ran by former Tier-1 operator friends of mine).

Most Importantly, at the core of Maneuver Warfare is Mission Command, vastly misunderstood and ignored by the establishment. Adapting Mission Command to its true Auftragstaktik state requires massive reforms to the personnel management system, as well as force structure. Instead, it is just easier to plaster all over PPT slide briefings, and hope something happens.

In high-intensity combat, if you don't stay on the move you are likely to become a casualty.

14 DEC 23 is the release and mailing of the hard copy of the New Maneuver Warfare Handbook. So far, it remains number 1 on the Amazon kindle edition under military history books.

Since the original maneuver warfare handbook was published in 1985, understanding of maneuver warfare has broadened and deepened. Here, the author of the original book, William S. Lind, shares that new knowledge with readers.

The New Maneuver Warfare Handbook offers novel insights in military theory while remaining focused on the people who do the fighting, Marines and soldiers from Battalion level on down through staff NCOs and NCOs. It includes updates of Marine Colonel Mike Wiley’s examples which illustrate the application of critical maneuver warfare concepts. It goes beyond the original book in discussing how to train for maneuver warfare.

In short, the New Maneuver Warfare Handbook augments the original book rather than replacing it, in ways useful to commanders at every tactical level. Like the earlier book, it is destined to become a classic in its field.

The book is 205-pages and covers a number of topics including...

-Maneuver warfare theory

-Operations, tactics, techniques and organization

-Combined arms, surfaces & gaps, recon-pull and mission command

-Amphibious operations

-Maneuver warfare culture

-Tactical Decision Exercises (TDEs) developed by the Special Tactics staff

-Outcomes Based Learning (OBL)

Pre-order the book to get 20-PERCENT OFF. Books will ship on 14 December 2023. An excellent but long article on Mission Command use in Ukraine. While it mentions some of the proponents of the doctrine (it is really a culture of Auftragstaktik), it does not talk about how to develop people to succeed with MC. At Nemertes.com, we develop you on how to develop your people to perform in a culture of Mission Command. We are currently working with the Washington, D.C. police. Please read the article below and review our website at https://nemertes.com/adaptive-leadership-training/ for more information. Johna Till Johnson

Russian forces attempted to cross the Siverskyi Donets river in eastern Ukraine this month using a pontoon bridge, but their tanks and armoured vehicles were picked off by Ukrainian artillery. So they tried it again. And again. And again. The Russian army made nine attempts to cross the river in the...

Almost everyone loves the OODA loop, but the bigger and tougher issue is how to people to use it?? At Nemertes Consulting we are beginning the virtual Agile Leader Training or ALT in March to show people how to develop others at using the OODA loop to make decisions. Stand by for our new web page soon.

Boyd's famous OODA loop (observe-orient-decide-act) is probably the most misunderstood and misused diagram of practical significance in decision making. It is to decision-making what the five elements (earth/fire/water/wind/ether) model from alchemy is to modern chemistry. Or what Freud's id-ego-sup...

OBL teaches students how to think instead of what to think by taking them outside their comfort zone and placing them in challenging and uncertain training environment built around realistic, scenario-based training evolutions. This approach simultaneously fosters important personal attributes including adaptability, critical thinking, problem solving skills, judgement, confidence and moral courage. Major topics covered in this book include:

The evolution of process-based and outcomes-based training

Maneuver Warfare Theory, John Boyd and the OODA Loop

Developing outcomes for attributes, skills and knowledge

Examples of OBL application to various combat training subjects

Free-play force-on-force scenario training

Tactical Decision Exercises (TDEs), wargames, staff rides and historical case studies
