Stalled contract for public college faculty, staff sparks protest

Community college faculty and staff will stage a standout and rally Tuesday morning in Worcester to protest stalled contract bargaining and attempts by campus presidents to prevent workers from participating in negotiations.

Members of the Massachusetts Community College Council, the statewide union representing community college faculty and staff, will hold the standout and rally starting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, outside Harrington Learning Center at Quinsigamond Community College, 670 West Boylston St., Worcester, where the next contract bargaining session is scheduled to take place. Massachusetts Teachers Association President Matt Bach and Vice President Deb Gesualdo will join the rally. MCCC is an affiliate of MTA.

The union and management have made no progress toward a new contract, though bargaining began four months ago. The MCCC has filed an unfair labor practice charge with state officials against the community college presidents for their attempts to change years of past practice in allowing members of the union’s bargaining team to access release time to attend bargaining sessions.

Without release time, workers on the bargaining team either cannot participate in negotiations or lose pay. The issue has gone unresolved for months, preventing bargaining on substantive issues regarding wages and working conditions.

The MCCC issued the following statement:
“Once again, we find ourselves facing a stalemate over settling a fair contract. The college presidents are inexplicably trying to change years of past practice, when instead we should be discussing wage equity for community college workers and proper staffing to meet rising enrollment at our colleges. Massachusetts touts its free community college program yet is not willing to make the investment in faculty and staff to meet the demands for that public good.”
