Dear Students,

We hope that your week is going well.

This is a friendly reminder that our invited talk on internship/job search and application strategies will be tomorrow (Thursday) 12-1pm. Our invited speaker, Evan Hoffman '21, will join us remotely via Zoom, and we will gather in CMACD 305/306/307 for his talk and Q&A. Lunch will be served.

Are you on the hunt for internships or new-grad roles in the tech industry? Navigating through the sea of ambiguously titled job listings can be quite a challenge. That's why we're excited to invite you to a special event on Thursday, November 16th where we'll be joined by our guest speaker, Evan Hoffman, who will be sharing his insights and expertise with you!

Seminar
How to Effectively Search the Web for Tech Roles and Avoiding the LinkedIn Resume Pile
Date: Thursday, 16th November
Time: 12 PM - 1 PM
Location: CMACD 305/306/307

Evan Hoffman, a 2021 Clark University graduate with a CS Major and Data Science Minor, has a wealth of experiences to offer. During his time at Clark, he played a pivotal role as a founding board member of TIE, served as a Teaching Assistant, and handled Sys Admin responsibilities. Following his graduation, Evan pursued internships at Booz Allen Hamilton and Capital One, where he continued into their rotational software engineering program. He's worked on website teams and currently contributes to the corporate surveillance and communications capture team.

Evan's journey is packed with valuable experiences, and he will guide you through the challenges of finding internships or new-grad tech roles. In a tech world full of ambiguously titled job listings, Evan will teach you how to narrow down the field and submit applications before they hit job aggregation sites. This proactive approach will help you stand out in a smaller pool of resumes.

Join us on Nov 16th in CMACD rooms 305, 306, and 307 from 12 PM to 1 PM, and get ready to supercharge your job search! This will be our last event of the semester so we're looking forward to seeing you there!

Best,
Rayyan A.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I'm excited to announce that the Department of Computer Science will be collaborating with C4 (Clark Competitive Computing Club) to bring you all another alumnus talk next week with Sam Kovaka. Sam graduated from Clark in 2016 with a major in Computer Science and Biology and went on to pursue a PhD in Computer Science from John Hopkins. His research is on developing algorithms for the analysis of long-read single-molecule sequencing data, currently focused on alignment of raw nanopore signal.

Sequence Alignment Algorithms for Genomics & Epi-omics
Sam Kovaka '16

Date: 21st April
Time: 2:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Location: Sackler 121

[Tacos, Pupusas & Drinks will be served]

*************************************************

In this talk, Sam will discuss two applications of nanopore signal alignment, and how the algorithms relate to widely used nucleotide read alignment algorithms used in standard genomic analysis. Sam will introduce us to UNCALLED: an algorithm which rapidly maps nanopore signal in real-time, enabling software-based targeted sequencing and then discuss his ongoing work on Uncalled4: a toolkit for analysis and visualization of nanopore signal alignments, currently focused on detection of RNA modifications.

Computer Science is a well-rounded major with lots of utilizations. I encourage you all to attend this talk to learn about the different applications of Computer Science in other fields and sectors. In addition to this, it's a good opportunity to learn about the path for higher education in Computer Science after college from someone who finished their PhD. It's a great way to explore how you may want to utilize your computing skills for different purposes and get insight on graduate schools if that's your next stop!

Thanks and have a great week!

Best,
