How are worm brains built? Does noise impact bird activity in cranberry bogs? Could studying the amphibian gut biome lead to advances in medicine?

These are just a few of the topics that 29 biology graduate students will cover at the annual Bumpus Symposium this Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Lasry Center for Bioscience.

Eleven students will present their research in a poster session; the others will explain their work in a series of 12- and 5-minute lightning talks.

Cities are confronting a new and unpredictable fiscal strain on top of their existing obligations: the rising costs associated with climate change, according to Professor Mark Davidson.

This week, Davidson opened a national panel hosted by Clark's School of Climate, Environment, and Society by outlining the mounting challenges cities face as extreme weather intensifies. The event, “The Resilience Imperative: How Cities Can Survive, and Thrive, in an Era of Extreme Weather,” convened government and nonprofit leaders who shared how communities across the U.S. are strengthening their climate resilience.

Panelists included Melissa Hoffer, appointed by Gov. Maura Healey as Massachusetts’ first chief climate officer; Patricia Lock Dawson, M.S., MBA, mayor of Riverside, California; and Saharnaz Mirzazad, CEO of ICLEI, a global network of more than 2,500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development.

Organized by the School of Climate, Environment, and Society, a national panel discussion addresses how cities are grappling with the challenges of extreme weather.
