What does it mean to become brave?

For Yakima Valley College nursing alumna Luanna McGuire, it meant caring for patients in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane, working in intensive care units across the country and embracing life's unexpected adventures.

Her debut memoir, Evidence of Becoming Brave, is a collection of lessons learned through nursing, travel and personal growth. From hurricane disaster relief in St. Thomas to exploring Machu Picchu, McGuire's story is a powerful reminder that courage often begins with taking the first step.

Read her inspiring story in the latest issue of YVC Voice magazine and discover why she believes we're all braver than we think.

From first-generation student to future engineer.

Julizza Gomez is proving that opportunities are within reach.

A Yakima native pursuing electrical and computer engineering, Julizza chose YVC because it allowed her to stay close to family while pursuing her educational goals.

As a first-generation college student, Julizza says earning her degree represents "building generational change as a result of discipline and courage."

"YVC has made me a more confident person who isn't afraid to take on a challenge."
