Volunteers Helping Volunteers!

While LLI courses may be on “pause” as we gear up for the fall semester on September 8, our incredible volunteers have been anything but idle! They’ve been busy helping staff prepare for another exciting semester, including attending training on how to serve as a Course Assistant, a vital role in making our courses run smoothly.

Even better, the training was led by LLI volunteers who generously shared their time, knowledge, and experience to help fellow volunteers succeed!

Interested in getting involved? Additional Course Assistant trainings will be held September 21 and October 8. If you’ve been thinking about volunteering with YC-LLI, this is a great place to start!

Next Friday, September 4 at 5:00 p.m., YC-LLI will join York College faculty, staff, and students for Walk a Mile, a powerful community event bringing people together to show that gender-based violence has no place in York.

The walk begins at 31 N. Pershing Avenue, travels down Market Street to Continental Square, and returns along Philadelphia Street. And yes, you’re invited to lace up your heels…or don’t!

Your participation helps support YWCA York, keeping its doors open, its crisis line answered, and survivors supported.

What an afternoon to remember!

The Appell Center for the Performing Arts rolled out the red carpet for YC-LLI, and we couldn’t be more grateful for such a special experience.

Members enjoyed a private showing of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), complete with concessions and the choice of orchestra or balcony seating. It was the perfect way to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, and just as importantly, to celebrate the friendships and connections that make YC-LLI so special.

Thank you to the Appell Center for helping us create such a memorable afternoon. We’re grateful for your hospitality, your partnership, and the opportunity to share these wonderful experiences with our members.

Join us for a guided tour of the Demuth Museum of Art and the historic Demuth To***co Shop, followed by a self-guided visit to the Lancaster Museum of Art.

Discover the museum's special 250th anniversary exhibition, where art and history come together to tell the story of the Demuth family and their role in shaping Lancaster, from colonial days through vibrant Independence Day celebrations and into the present. Explore the home and studio of renowned artist Charles Demuth, then uncover Lancaster County's rich to***co heritage in the family's original to***co shop.

We'll end with a visit to the nationally recognized Strictly Functional Pottery National, featuring stunning handcrafted pottery from artists across the country.

What a Kahoot! it was!

YC-LLI members had a great time in Teddy Fisher's course, Parks in Our Community, where they explored the incredible parks and recreational opportunities right here in York County.

To kick things off, Teddy introduced many participants to Kahoot!, an interactive online quiz platform that turned learning into a little friendly competition. It was a perfect reminder that at YC-LLI, you're never too old to learn something new, and have a lot of fun doing it! Thank you, Teddy, for an informative and engaging class!

Spartan Spotlight!

YC-LLI was thrilled to welcome York College's own Hannah Zinn this summer!

A Scholar-in-Residence with the York College Center for Community Engagement, recent environmental horticulture graduate, and current MBA student, Hannah shared a captivating look at Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural masterpiece.

Drawing on her experience as a Fallingwater landscape intern, where she lived on the adjacent Bear Run Nature Preserve and worked on the estate, Hannah brought the site's history to life with behind-the-scenes stories and unique insights that only an insider could share.

We're excited to welcome Hannah back this fall when she teams up with AnaLu Mac Vean to teach another engaging YC-LLI course!
