The Ward Beecher Planetarium has been offering free programs on astronomy, space science, and related fields to the public for more than 40 years. Saturday afternoon programs normally are intended for families and children. Field trip programs are available during the day during the week; teachers should go to www.wbplanetarium.org for more information.

One week to go! 🌕🔴

On the night of August 27th into the 28th, the Sturgeon Moon will slip almost entirely into Earth's shadow for a deep partial lunar eclipse lasting more than 3 hours, with 93% covered at maximum.

The eclipse is visible across most of the Americas, plus parts of Europe and Africa. And, unlike a solar eclipse, it's completely safe to watch with just your eyes.

At a meeting of the International Astronomical Union 20 years ago today, astronomers vote on a definition of a "planet." The new criteria:

🌘 Must orbit its host star
🌓 Must be mostly round
🌒 Must be massive enough to clear away other objects of similar size in its orbit

Pluto fails on the third condition and becomes a dwarf planet.
