Trombonists Jacob Norton and Luke Walters, two YSU senior music performance majors, traveled across the country this summer to refine their performance skills and learn from low brass professionals. 🎶

After attending the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Brass Institute as an Orchestral Fellow earlier this summer, Jacob Norton was selected to attend the Bay View Brass Seminar in Petoskey, Michigan! During the 4-week chamber intensive, Jacob learned from the Bay View Brass Quintet and participated in chamber coaching, masterclasses, outreach concerts, and private lessons.

This past May, Luke Walters traveled to the University of Arizona to participate in the Becker Low Brass Boot Camp. During this week-long program, he attended masterclasses and received valuable training focused on orchestral audition and performance preparation.

Bravo to Jacob and Luke on expanding their knowledge and representing the Dana School of Music in these programs! 👏

Our first-year students brought the energy to IGNITE!! 🔥

Yesterday, our newest penguins took their first steps on campus, connected with fellow students, and explored everything that YSU has to offer.

It was wonderful seeing both new and familiar faces on campus, and we can’t wait to see everyone again on Monday! 🐧

Meet Nicole Wells, our newest Academic Advisor for music and theatre students! 🐧

Nicole holds a B.A. from Kent State University and an M.A. in Higher Education from Geneva College and brings nearly 25 years of higher education experience to her new role.

After beginning her career at Kent State University and Cleveland State University, Nicole joined Youngstown State University in 2007 and has worked with students in several areas across campus, including business, health and human services, nursing, and education.

After nearly 20 years at YSU, Nicole is excited to begin this new chapter in CCCA and connect with a new group of students and help them navigate college, make connections, and reach their goals.

Outside of work, Nicole enjoys reading, working on puzzles, and spending time with her husband and niece. And perhaps most importantly, she LOVES all things Disney!

As a longtime member of the YSU community and dedicated student advocate, Nicole looks forward to assisting CCCA students in their academic and creative journeys.

Last week, we hosted our first annual Summer Art Camp! 🎨☀️

Young artists spent a week on campus experimenting with painting, printmaking, design, and more, building new skills and creating original work along the way. The week ended with a celebratory exhibition in the Solomon Gallery, where family and friends saw everything they created!

It was a joy to see their creativity and energy throughout the week. We hope to see these young artists back on campus soon! ✨

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, “Stitches in Time: Mahoning Valley 250” at the McDonough Museum of Art features artwork and artifacts that explore how the people of the Mahoning Valley have shaped the American story.

Organized by Dr. Amy Fluker with Museum Director Claudia Berlinski, the exhibition marks a major milestone for the YSU History Program and was made possible through grant funding from the Ohio History Connection.

This exhibition preludes the traveling exhibit “Mahoning Valley 250: A Celebration of Change-Makers and Their Communities”, and it features objects on loan from The Butler Institute of American Art, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, the Trumbull County Historical Society, Maag Library, and the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor.

Explore “Stitches in Time: Mahoning Valley 250” at the McDonough Museum of Art through July 18 and discover the stories that connect the Mahoning Valley to our nation's history. ✨
