| 🌱 When tourists encounter a “green” action, what makes them believe it represents a genuine sustainability commitment?

(Vietnamese in the comment section)

In tourism, practices such as waste separation, refill stations, renewable energy use, or local product sourcing can serve as sustainability signals that shape how tourists evaluate environmental commitments. However, a key question remains: How do these signals translate into trust and positive perceptions?

This question is explored in the study “From eco-signals to green trust: How tourists evaluate sustainability credibility through online reviews,” co-authored by Assoc. Prof. Phan Thi Thuc Anh and Asst. Prof. Pham Van Kien from GREEN-X, together with Pham Thi Thuy Dung, and published in the Journal of Destination Marketing & Management - a leading SSCI Q1 journal with an Impact Factor of 8.0 in tourism and destination research.

Using 138,683 naturally occurring online tourism reviews from Google Maps and TripAdvisor across 10 coastal and island destinations in Southeast and East Asia, the study examines how tourists interpret sustainability-related signals through their real travel experiences. The research combines natural language processing, dictionary-based text analytics, sentiment analysis, BERTopic modeling, regression analysis, mediation analysis, and robustness checks to uncover how sustainability perceptions are formed.

The findings reveal an important pathway in how tourists evaluate sustainability commitments:
Sustainability signals → Eco-authenticity inference → Green trust → Tourist sentiment

The study shows that:
✅ Sustainability signals in online reviews strengthen tourists’ perceptions of environmental authenticity.
✅ Perceived eco-authenticity contributes to the formation of green trust, which becomes the key mechanism linking sustainability practices to more positive tourist sentiment.
✅ Once green trust is considered, eco-authenticity alone does not have a significant direct effect on sentiment, highlighting that authentic sustainability practices create value when they build confidence in environmental responsibility.

These findings suggest that sustainability efforts should go beyond communicating “green” actions. To generate meaningful impact, practices need to be visible, credible, and experienced by tourists in real contexts.

By leveraging large-scale online review data, the study also demonstrates the potential of digital traces to reveal how tourists perceive and evaluate sustainability practices, while opening new directions for future research on technology-enabled approaches to understanding sustainable tourism behavior.

What if sustainability research did not end with a paper — but continued into data, AI, technology, real-world deployment and measurable impact?

This is the direction we are building at GREEN-X, VinUniversity.

Across three interconnected pillars — AI-Enabled Green Policy & Governance, AI-Enabled Circular & Low-Carbon Economy, and AI for Tropical Blue Economy — we are developing a new generation of research outputs:

🌿 Industry Innovation Intelligence, including the Industry Innovation Index; Vietnam Economy Intelligence; and Agentic Green Policy Intelligence to understand, benchmark and support green and digital transformation.

♻️ AI-powered carbon and water intelligence, autonomous water treatment & reuse, and Agentic Circular Economy Intelligence to help move cities and industries toward lower-carbon, more circular systems.

🌊 Physical AI adaptive feeding systems, ocean robots for biodiversity conservation, multimodal agentic farm intelligence, and Blue Data & AI Foundation Models for tropical aquaculture and marine ecosystems.

What makes this especially exciting is Vietnam itself — our enterprises, cities, coastal regions and tropical ecosystems can become living laboratories where we generate unique data, advance science and AI, deploy solutions, and learn what actually works.

From Vietnam, for challenges that extend far beyond Vietnam.
