VINUNIVERSITY CONNECTS NATIONAL RESEARCH CAPABILITIES WITH VIETNAM’S STRATEGIC TECHNOLOGY PRIORITIES

From rare earths and strategic metals, advanced materials, clean energy and hydrogen to AI, genomics and precision medicine — these are among the strategic areas where VinUniversity will deepen research collaboration with institutions under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

On September 25, as part of the strategic partnership between VAST and Vingroup, VinUniversity signed three research collaboration agreements with the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH), the Institute of Materials Science, and the Institute of Biology.

The collaborations go beyond individual research projects. They aim to establish joint research teams; share laboratories, research infrastructure and high-performance computing capabilities; jointly undertake national and international science and technology projects; and support the training and co-supervision of Master’s, PhD and postdoctoral researchers.

Key research areas include:

1. Rare earths, strategic metals, advanced materials and nanotechnology
2. Clean energy, energy storage and hydrogen
3. AI, cybersecurity and smart cities
4. Genomics, precision medicine, biomaterials and biomedical technologies

“This collaboration expands the space for connecting the scientific capabilities of research institutes with real-world technology challenges,” said Dr. Le Mai Lan, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup and President of VinUniversity’s University Council.

She highlighted the potential of bringing together VAST’s research capabilities, VinUniversity’s research and education, and the technology and industrial capabilities of Vingroup and VinSpace to advance research into technology transfer and real-world applications, while developing high-quality talent for Vietnam.

Professor Tran Hong Thai, President of VAST, also emphasized the importance of strengthening the connection between research, education and industry, enabling research outcomes to move towards products, technology transfer and commercialization.

For VinUniversity, these agreements create new opportunities to connect the University’s research capabilities with Vietnam’s national research infrastructure and industry ecosystem — building research teams capable of addressing major challenges for Vietnam while contributing to frontier research globally.

On September 26, 700 new students of Cohort 7, from Vietnam and 24 countries, will officially begin their journey at VinUni.

This year's Convocation is VinUni's first since the Prime Minister's Decision No. 1612/QĐ-TTg, under which the University aims to rank among the world's top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings by 2035. Most of Cohort 7 will graduate in 2030, so their journey begins alongside a new chapter for VinUni.

AI IS CHANGING THE ROLE OF THE UNIVERSITY. WHO OWNS THE TRANSFORMATION?

As AI becomes increasingly capable of teaching, analysing, creating and acting on our behalf, the question is no longer simply how universities should adopt AI, but also: What is the role of a university in an AI-driven world? And what capabilities must universities themselves build and own to shape that future?

These questions ran through Times Higher Education Digital Universities Asia 2026, held in Chengdu, China on 24–25 September, bringing together university, industry and policy leaders to explore how AI and digital transformation are reshaping education, research, student experience, university leadership and the digital campus.

At the leadership panel “Who owns digital transformation?”, Ms. Hao Pham, Vice-President of the University Council and Chief of Staff at VinUniversity, joined leaders from Tsinghua University, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences to explore a question that is becoming increasingly important as AI evolves from assistive tools towards increasingly autonomous systems: Who actually owns the transformation?

From VinUniversity’s perspective:

Digital transformation is becoming capability transformation.

Transformation cannot be the responsibility of the CIO, technology teams or a digital transformation office alone. Faculty and staff need to lead change in the areas closest to their work, where they best understand the problems to be solved and the value AI can create. The university’s role is to build the infrastructure, data, governance and safe environment that allow individual experiments to develop into institutional capability - responsibly and at scale.

As AI adoption accelerates, the next competitive advantage for universities may not lie in who has access to the most powerful AI tools, but in the ability to turn thousands of individual AI experiments into institutional capability that creates value for students, faculty and society.

AI may transform the university. But the deeper transformation is the university’s ability to transform itself.

For VinUniversity, this focus on institutional capability also lays the foundation for a longer-term journey with AI.

The journey begins with becoming an AI-empowered university: moving beyond individual applications of AI in teaching and learning to progressively harnessing AI across research, operations, decision-making and the student experience.

Looking further ahead, VinUniversity aspires to become an AI-native university - where AI is not simply another technology added to existing systems, but is thoughtfully embedded into how the university operates and creates value, while people, academic values and the university’s mission remain at the centre.

| TWO GENERATIONS OF VINUNIANS ON THE SAME SSEAYP 2027 VOYAGE 🇻🇳🌏

Nguyen Dang Dat, a Cohort 3 alumnus and Nguyen Dinh Minh Nhat, a Cohort 4 student, are 2 of 22 young Vietnamese selected as delegates to the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) 2027, marking the first time VinUni will be represented at this long-standing youth exchange program between Southeast Asia and Japan.

What makes this milestone meaningful goes beyond the opportunity to join an international program. It also reflects how international experiences have gradually become a natural part of the way VinUni students learn and grow. Through a multicultural learning environment, exchange opportunities, and research experiences, VinUnians are continually placed in settings that encourage them to listen, engage in dialogue, and learn to work across differences. Dat and Nhat each bring their own experiences to this journey yet share a desire to represent a generation of young Vietnamese who are open-minded, proactive, grounded in their identity, and ready to contribute their perspectives to the region’s shared conversations.

NEW CITY, NEW ROUTES, NEW CREW 🌏

For many of our international students, coming to VinUniversity also means getting used to a new city, a new neighborhood, and a whole new daily routine.

So before diving into university life, it was time to explore a little.

To help Cohort 7 international students settle in and get to know the area beyond campus, the VinUni International Student Association organized an Ocean Park Tour as one of their first introductions to everyday life around VinUni. The tour took students to places they’ll probably be coming back to often, from local shops and restaurants to parks, everyday essentials, and a few useful spots around the neighborhood.

But figuring out where things are was only part of the day. It was also a chance to meet new people, explore together, and make Hanoi feel a little less unfamiliar.

Freda Biak Len Sung, an Electrical Engineering student from Myanmar, shared:

“My experience at VinUni has been even better than I expected. I’ve already made many new friends, both international and Vietnamese, and everyone has been incredibly welcoming. The campus, Ocean Park, and the support from faculty and staff have all made these first weeks really enjoyable.”

That sense of discovery also stood out to Kriziaela Torregosa Micayabas, a Nursing student from the Philippines:

“Being here still feels a little surreal. I’ve loved exploring the campus and Ocean Park, meeting people from different backgrounds, and experiencing a completely new culture. I’m especially grateful for the friends I met during WOW Week.”

First stops done. Plenty more of Hanoi to come. 👀

From 24-25 September 2026, higher education leaders, technology experts, and policymakers from across Asia will convene at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu, China, for THE Digital Universities Asia 2026, a forum dedicated to exploring the future of universities in an increasingly digital world.

Representing VinUniversity, Ms. Pham Thanh Hao, Vice President of the VinUniversity Council, will participate in the panel discussion"Who owns digital transformation?", joining fellow higher education leaders to examine key questions facing universities today:

"Calculated Bets" of a Top 2% Scientist Who Chose Vietnam - Kumar Vikrant, Assistant Professor at VinUniversity

A year ago, in September 2025, a young scientist left Seoul after seven years to move to a country he had never lived in and had no prior connection to - Vietnam. Here, however, he found a scientific approach aligned with what he had always pursued: turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

That scientist is Kumar Vikrant, Assistant Professor at the College of Engineering and Computer Science and Principal Investigator at the Center for Materials Innovation and Technology, VinUniversity.

Prior to this, his entire academic and research career had unfolded in India and South Korea. Ranked among the world's top 2% of scientists in Earth and Environmental Sciences and Chemical Engineering since 2021 (based on Scopus citation data), he became one of the first five scholars selected for the VinUniversity Assistant Professorship (VAP) Program.

For Dr. Kumar Vikrant, the decision to come to Vietnam did not stem from cultural familiarity, but from a clear-eyed assessment of opportunity and timing. There are moments when a scientific ecosystem brings three things together at once: a problem worth solving, resources to begin, and a pace fast enough for a researcher to see results within their own career. Those three conditions rarely align. Dr. Kumar Vikrant recognized that alignment, and chose to build inside it - with Vietnam, and with VinUniversity.

"How do we make this tangible? How do people actually benefit? And how do we bring down the cost? These three questions can turn something ordinary into something extraordinary," Dr. Kumar Vikrant, says, describing the core questions that shape his research on air quality.

Advancing sustainable solutions aimed at "chasing clearer skies" from Vietnam, his long-term objective is to develop compact air-treatment units that can be installed directly at industrial sites in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, capturing pollutants at the point of emission before they disperse into the urban atmosphere. He has set this as a 10-to-20-year research target.
