USP Samoa Campus Open Day set for Thursday
APIA, Samoa — The University of the South Pacific (USP) Samoa Campus will open its doors tomorrow, Thursday August 27, for its annual Open Day, bringing together prospective students, educators and members of the public for a celebration of education, culture and opportunity.
Held under the theme “Where Culture Meets Excellence,” the event will showcase USP’s six schools, its range of academic programmes and the different pathways available to students pursuing further education and future careers.
Thousands of college-leaving students from across Upolu are expected to attend, alongside teachers, members of the public and people who have returned to study after entering the workforce.
The Open Day will give visitors an opportunity to explore the Alafua Campus, including its libraries, laboratories, learning spaces and other facilities through student-led tours. Students will also be able to meet lecturers and staff, participate in quizzes and interactive demonstrations, and learn more about USP’s programmes and services.
Culture will also feature prominently, with food vendors, cultural performances and activities highlighting USP’s role in preserving and promoting Pacific identity while providing internationally recognised education.
A key feature of this year’s programme will be the story of Louise Marie Malaki, a current USP student pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Agriculture. Malaki, who is also President of the USP Student Association in Samoa, is pursuing her studies in a field traditionally dominated by men and will share her experiences with prospective students.
Organisers say her story is intended to encourage young people to set ambitious academic goals and consider how education can contribute to their communities and wider society.
The programme will begin with an invocation by Dr Seve Folototo Seve, Discipline Coordinator for Accounting at Alafua Campus. Welcoming remarks will be delivered by Campus Director Afioga Tootoooleaava Dr Fanaafi Aiono-Le Tagaloa, with the vote of thanks by Dr Vili Savou.
A free bus service will also operate tomorrow between the Savalalo Market bus depot and the Alafua Campus, providing transport for students attending the event. The service will run from 7.00am to 2.00pm.
The Open Day will officially run from 9.30am to 1.30pm at the USP Alafua Campus.
The community is invited to attend and experience a day where Pacific culture, education and academic excellence come together.
