🌳😌🌇The cooling power of trees starts with shade.

When surfaces like pavement, rooftops and buildings are exposed to direct sunlight, they absorb and store heat, releasing it back into the air long after the sun goes down. Trees interrupt that process. They shade sidewalks, streets and people, preventing surfaces from heating up in the first place. They also cool the surrounding air through evapotranspiration, the release of water v***r from leaves.

Together, shade and evapotranspiration allow trees to provide cooling at multiple scales at once — from lowering neighborhood air temperatures to reducing surface heating to easing hyperlocal thermal stress. This all makes outdoor conditions more bearable during the hottest months of the year and reduces heat-induced illness and mortality.

⚠️ Mis- and disinformation is a global threat that can jeopardise crisis response, escalate geopolitical tensions, and undermine societal cohesion.

🌐 The United Nations Global Risks Report offers analysis of where vulnerabilities are rising fastest, and where international preparedness is falling behind. One risk stands out: mis- and disinformation. Stakeholders see it as highly consequential and severely underprepared for, with cascading effects on geopolitical tensions, social cohesion and crisis response.

Beyond this, three clusters of global vulnerabilities emerge:

🟩 Environmental: natural resource pressures, natural hazards, biodiversity decline and large-scale carbon pollution. These risks are widely recognised, yet global readiness still trails the scale of the challenge.

🟥 Societal: the prospect of a new pandemic, emerging biorisks and large-scale displacement. These risks are seen as important, interconnected and underprepared for.

🟨 Technological: cybersecurity breakdowns, rapidly advancing AI and frontier technologies, and concentrated power in the tech sector. Institutions are struggling to keep pace.

These insights point to where international cooperation can make the biggest difference: strengthening shared knowledge, experience and resilience.

LACK OF LIBRARY, LOWER LITERACY

Despite a law mandating libraries in every community, thousands of barangays across the country remain without access to basic learning spaces. As literacy rates fall and students struggle with comprehension, the gap reveals a deeper issue of long-term underinvestment in public education infrastructure. Without accessible libraries, the learning divide will only continue to widen in both physical and digital spaces.
