The aim of the ADSAI PhD programme is to train students to master the modern tools of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, preparing them to create new analysis methods while giving them the expertise to apply cutting-edge tools to problems in the real world. Our research spans from theoretical to applied Machine Learning, by understanding how modern methodologies became popular we frame their current limitations and highlight their possibility of extension.

ADSAI students will master modern concepts of machine learning and statistical analysis, corroborated by strong analytical problem-solving skills. For instance, graduates will be trained in deep learning and neural networks, in Bayesian methods and sampling algorithms for probabilistica graphical models, in probabilistic programming for scalable inference, high performance computing and software development.

🇮🇹 Motivazione e obiettivi 📌
L'obiettivo del programma di dottorato ADSAI è formare gli studenti a padroneggiare i moderni strumenti di Data Science e Intelligenza Artificiale, preparandoli a creare nuovi metodi di analisi e fornendo loro le competenze per applicare strumenti all'avanguardia ai problemi nel mondo reale. La nostra ricerca spazia dal Machine Learning teorico a quello applicato, comprendendo come le moderne metodologie sono diventate popolari, ne inquadreremo i limiti attuali e ne evidenziamo la possibilità di estensione.

Gli studenti ADSAI padroneggeranno concetti moderni di apprendimento automatico e analisi statistica, corroborati da forti capacità analitiche di risoluzione dei problemi. Ad esempio, i laureati saranno formati in deep learning e reti neurali, in metodi bayesiani e algoritmi di campionamento per modelli grafici probabilistici, in programmazione probabilistica per inferenza scalabile, calcolo ad alte prestazioni e sviluppo software.

As far as applications are concerned, we focus on social and economic phenomena, analysis of large scale social surveys, analysis of social networks, detection of fairness and bias in machine learning models.

We also work on biodiversity informatics to improve our knowledge of the environment, with the aim to provide us baseline for adapting to and mitigating the effects of global changes in the coming years.

There are 15 funded scholarships available and 2 additional non-funded scholarships.

The Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence PhD Program (ADSAI) trains researchers and highly qualified experts, with broad focus on the applications to: natural and life sciences, industry, smart cities and transportation, economy and society.

ADSAI is an international doctorate course, taught in English, and it is offered by the University of Trieste, with the collaboration of researchers from other research institutions within the broader the Trieste area, among which SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies), ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), INAF (Astrophysics observatory), and Area Science Park (technological pask and tech transfer).
