Essex Abroad Ambassador Monika followed a year abroad in Canada and a summer school in Spain with an internship in Seoul, South Korea 🇰🇷

“I was dreaming about going to South Korea for a while now, but it seemed very out of reach. I found out about Absolute Internship at the University of Essex Study Abroad Fair last November and no words will express how happy I am about that! They helped with EVERYTHING, which made the whole process of the application stress-free! 🎯

I was living in Myeong-dong, a busy district of Seoul full of great street food and a lot of fun fashion and beauty stores. Every day I crossed the Han River to get to my office in the modern district of Gangnam. The skyscrapers made me feel truly inspired. Nevertheless, the working culture in Korea is hard to adjust to. Happily, I worked in an international company, which made sure that I got the best out of my cultural experience there by taking me to lunches at the local bars and karaoke evenings 🌃 During my free time, I got to explore many districts of Seoul and even travelled beyond to Busan, Sokcho and Nami Island. Still, the biggest highlight of the whole trip is the Korean food. You cannot ever get enough of it!

The programme gives you this feeling of independence because you are there working on your own, at the same time you will get to know other interns, which helps create a feeling of belonging. Add something truly amazing experience to your CV: intern abroad at your dream destination! 🌏

🌍 Summer Volunteering in Cameroon 🌿✨

This summer, I had the privilege of volunteering as a Speech and Language Therapist at Mbingo Baptist Hospital and Mbingo Annex in Cameroon. Working alongside amazing doctors and helping patients with diverse speech and swallowing challenges was truly rewarding.

💡 I gained invaluable experience in community-based rehabilitation and learned so much from the local community. Communicating in their native language strengthened our connection and improved care.

Grateful to and CBC Health Services for this life-changing opportunity. I highly recommend volunteering abroad! 💛🌍

Rae recently completed a volunteering project in Sri Lanka and shared these amazing photos! 📸
A highlight of the trip was working with the nurses in Sri Lanka and spending time at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital 🏥
Rae also learnt about Ayurvedic medicine 🧘‍♂️
An added bonus was spending an afternoon looking after sea turtles! 🐢

‼️Research abroad feedback‼️

“I would definitely recommend this program to others! It was fantastic to be involved in research at the Deutschsprachatlas, Marburg. It was a privilege and I am so grateful to DAAD and Phillips-Marburg Universität 🙏🏽

Being involved in real research, assisting a phd student, meant I’m equipped with specialist knowledge and skill. This opportunity provided me with insight that was unavailable elsewhere. I can confidently say I am better Linguist because of this program ✨

With so many wonderful experiences it’s impossible to pick just one highlight. Attending a concert in Mainz, immersing in Berlin‘s history and meeting so many intelligent interns from Canada, Britain, USA and Ireland made this trip worthwhile 🌎

“My summer at Viessmann was nothing short of a dramatic movie. The journey was filled with dramatic highs and lows, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
The support and encouragement I received from my team in Germany were extraordinary and deeply appreciated.
I’m grateful for the opportunity provided by Essex Abroad, which allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. This adventure has been a significant chapter in my career, and I am thankful for the experiences and memories I’ve gained along the way.

I’m Harshini from the department, currently pursuing my Master’s in Electronic Engineering. This summer, I had an amazing opportunity to attend a summer school in Denmark, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting experiences of my academic journey.

Before this, I had never flown a drone, let alone built one from scratch. But this summer school changed that! I learned to build, connect, calibrate, and fly drones, along with exploring into computer vision to implement object detection algorithms. It was a perfect blend of hands-on learning and technical skill-building.

But the experience wasn’t just about academics. It was filled with fun, laughter, and new friendships. The connections I made and the memories we shared are priceless. The energy, collaboration, and pure joy of learning in such an environment were incredible.

If anyone ever get the chance to attend a summer school like this, don’t hesitate—just go for it! It’s an experience you won’t want to miss.

Anna studies Physiotherapy in our department and has just returned from a volunteering programme with in Fiji 🇫🇯
She says “I highly recommend this program to other Essex students. It offers a unique and rare opportunity that may not be available in 20-30 years. The program is both ethical and sustainable, and I appreciated the valuable learning experience it provided 🌴
The highlight of my trip was living with a host Fijian family. Observing the differences between their way of life and my family’s in the Western world was truly eye-opening 💚
