Mount Everest, towering around 8,849 meters above sea level, contains layers of marine limestone and fossilized sea life near its summit. These rocks originated hundreds of millions of years ago on the floor of the ancient Tethys Sea evidence that the rock formed underwater. The marine deposits were later uplifted through plate tectonics Indian Plate”] collided with the Eurasian Plate. This collision created the Himalayas, which continue to rise and experience frequent earthquakes to this day.
