🎙 Faculty Spotlight | Public Health, Psychology, and Preparedness

Our Head of Department, Prof. Moran Bodas , recently took part in a thoughtful conversation with Prof. Bruce Rosen on his YouTube channel, Israel Health Highlights, addressing one of the most persistent challenges in public health and emergency management: why fear-based preparedness messaging so often fails.

Drawing on conflict psychology and Israel’s reality of chronic threat exposure, Prof. Bodas explains how denial and delayed action are not signs of public apathy, but adaptive psychological responses. The discussion highlights the need to move beyond fear-driven communication toward approaches that strengthen self-efficacy, agency, and community resilience.

The interview offers important insights for public health professionals, emergency managers, and policy makers seeking to design preparedness strategies that motivate action before crises unfold—while also reducing stress and disengagement.

We’re proud to see our department’s research and thinking contributing to critical conversations at the intersection of psychology, public health, and emergency preparedness.

Our Emergency and Disaster Management master’s students are currently taking part in a classroom exercise as part of the Introduction to Emergency and Disaster Management course.

The exercise compares the All Hazards Approach with the Top Hazards Approach, prompting team-based discussion on how different planning frameworks respond to today’s risk landscape.

A focused, practical discussion that encourages critical thinking and real-world decision-making in emergency and disaster management.

Today, students from the Israeli and International tracks of the Emergency and Disaster Management Department at the School of Public Health took part in a team-building workshop. No presentations and no theory, just learning through experience, movement, and working together.

The activities focused on coordination, clear communication, and solving problems as a team, sometimes under pressure. It quickly became clear that the best solutions don’t come from individuals, but from teamwork.

Throughout the workshop, students brought different working styles, rhythms, and approaches to the table, showing that there is more than one way to reach a solution. Along the way, teamwork, listening, and coordination proved to be key skills in moments that require quick thinking and decisions.

The workshop created an open and relaxed space for getting to know one another, sharing ideas, and enjoying plenty of humor, all through hands-on, shared experiences. A great way to connect students from both tracks and build a foundation for future collaboration.

Storm Is Coming — Are We Ready?
Byron Storm is expected to arrive in Israel tomorrow evening, and you can already feel the air getting heavier before the winds begin. Scientific evidence shows a rise in both the frequency and intensity of storms across the Mediterranean and around the world.
A study led by Prof. Moran Bodas, Head of the Emergency and Disaster Management Program at Tel Aviv University, highlights an important insight (https://bit.ly/48qQUpz): even in regions that regularly experience severe storms — such as Bermuda, where nearly all residents encountered an extreme weather event in the past five years — public remains only partial. Many households keep basic supplies, but more substantial actions such as family emergency planning, preparing for flooding or reinforcing structures are far less common.
A similar pattern appears in other -related . Another study conducted by our program found that although the public is aware of heatwave risks, most people still do not prepare adequately. Climate change is intensifying both heatwaves and winter storms, yet public behavior has not fully adjusted to this new reality.

This is exactly where the Emergency and Disaster Management Program at Tel Aviv University comes in. Our master’s programs focus on understanding extreme weather scenarios, identifying risks and building meaningful preparedness. From the next severe heatwave to a sudden mid-week storm, we aim to develop the analytical and practical skills needed for rapid response and stronger community resilience.
As Byron approaches, it’s a good moment to remember that the next emergency will not always resemble the last. Sometimes it arrives with 40°C heat, and sometimes with heavy rain on a December night.

During the opening week of the academic year, we held the conference of the Master’s Program in Emergency and Disaster Management, in collaboration with the Department of Occupational Health at the School of Public Health, Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
The conference focused on injury, rehabilitation, and return to work – a multidisciplinary perspective following October 7 and the Iron Swords War.

We had the privilege of hearing the story of Yoav Tzivoni, an IDF combat soldier who was critically injured in Gaza. Yoav spoke with honesty and courage about his long journey from injury to rehabilitation and returning to everyday life. His story reminded us all of the strength and hope that lie in the human will to move forward.

Throughout the two panel discussions, experts from different fields explored key questions that concern us all – how to return to work, how to rebuild daily routines, and how society can play a role in the process of recovery and healing.

Thank you to all speakers and participants for an evening that combined knowledge, professionalism, compassion, and hope for a healthier future.
