أنشئت جامعة حضرموت بالقرار الجمهوري رقم (45) لسنة 1993م، ويقع المركز الرئيسي للجامعة في مدينة المكلا عاصمة محافظة حضرموت ، ولها عدد من الكليات في كل من مدينة سيئون ، ومدينة الغيضة بمحافظة المهرة ، وجزيرة سقطرى .
وقد بدأت الدراسة في مساق البكالوريوس فيها في العام الجامعي 1995-1996م بافتتاح 3 كليات هي : الهندسة والبترول ،كلية البنات و كلية التربية – سيئون ، وبلغ عدد الكليات في العام الجامعي 2017-2018م سبعة عشر كلية، إضافة الى خمسة مراكز بحثية ومركز استشاري وعدد من المراكز الخدمية . ويتبع الجامعة مراكز تدريبية هي : مستشفى جامعي ومركز صحي وروضة للأطفال .
والجامعة عضو عامل في اتحاد الجامعات العربية واتحاد جامعات العالم الإسلامي واختير رئيس الجامعة في الدورة الخمسين لمؤتمر الاتحاد عضوا في المكتب التنفيذي للاتحاد.
Hadhramout University (HU) established by the Presidential Decree No. (45) of 1993 and characterized by scientific specificity as it has focused on the technology and scientific specializations needed by contemporary development plans.
HU is located in Mukalla City, the capital of Hadhramout Governorate, however, it has a number of colleges in the cities of Seiyun, Al Ghaydah and in Al Mahrah Governorate and Socotra.
The study in HU began with the undergraduate courses in the academic year 1995-1996 by opening three colleges which are: Engineering and Petroleum, Women's College and College of Education/ Seiyun, and in the academic year 2017-2018 the number of colleges reaches to seventeen.
HU also has five research centers, University Advisory Center and a number of service and training centers and facilities, such as: the University Hospital, HU Family Medicine Center and the Model University Kindergarten.
