SATS Roadshow – Pretoria West

The South African Theological Seminary (SATS) Roadshow visited Christ Apostolic Church in Pretoria West on 10 October 2026. The event provided an opportunity to connect with the local Christian community, introduce SATS’s theological education and training opportunities, and encourage pastors, church leaders, and aspiring ministry workers to grow in their knowledge of God’s Word and prepare for effective Christian service.

SATS extends its gratitude to Christ Apostolic Church for hosting this meaningful event and for the opportunity to engage with the local church community.

On behalf of the South African Theological Seminary (SATS), we extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dr Douglas Geivett (1959–2026). His contribution to Christian philosophy, theology, and apologetics has enriched the wider Christian community and strengthened the defence of the Christian faith.

We extend our sincere sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were impacted by his life and work. May the Lord grant them comfort and peace, and may the hope of the resurrection in Jesus Christ sustain them during this time of loss.

I once visited my uncle who lived in the San Francisco Bay area and worked in Silicon Valley––the area outside of San Francisco densely populated with new startups and established tech companies, like Google and Apple. While in Silicon Valley, I heard the common catch phrase: “Fake it 'till you make it!” This old adage usually means that if one positively imitates confidence, they will eventually achieve their desired results. But in Silicon Valley, it has a slightly twisted meaning. New startup businesses often operate on shoe-string budgets and need to sell their product or service, but hesitant consumers do not want to purchase products from unknown companies without a proven track record. So,startups often have to fake it––sometimes by employing deception or exaggeration that their product or service does what they claim––whilst maintaining a poker face of confidence. This faked confidence often speeds the process of getting their product or service to market especially whilst improving development [1].

From 2021 to 2026, SATS has invited each PhD graduate from the preceding year to submit a short article summarising his or her PhD thesis. Each cohort's thesis summaries are then professionally laid out and published in an annual compendium. The PhD Compendium has served as a celebratory platform where we can showcase the results of God-glorifying, church-edifying, academically rigorous research conducted at the apex of the student research journey. It is a joy for SATS to both celebrate this milestone with our alumni and to share it with the broader church.

There is this enigmatic event early in Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus made a journey from Galilee to the Jordan River where his cousin John was baptising. Jesus wanted to be baptised by him too, but he knew something of who Jesus was, and there was no way he was going to baptise him! “Please baptise me,” Jesus asked. “No, never,” John responds. “I need to be baptised by you, and yet you come and ask me to baptise you?!” John finally consents to baptise Jesus after he insists that he needs to be baptised in order to fulfil all righteousness. As soon as Jesus was baptised, heaven opened, and the Holy Spirit rested on Jesus in the form of a dove, and a celestial voice spoke, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:1–17; NIV).
