African Centre for Cities

African Centre for Cities ACC focuses on quality scholarship regarding the dynamics of unsustainable urbanisation processes in

Rapid and poorly governed urbanization in Africa points to a profound developmental and philosophical crisis. Most scholarship focuses on the development challenges but continue to fail to provide adequate answers or proposal to reverse growing urban inequality, environmental degradation and social conflicts. There is hardly any sustained scholarship on the existential and cultural dimensions of A

frican urbanism. The ACC is a response to the growing recognition world-wide of the importance of cities, and particularly cities in the developing world. In South Africa this is reflected in the increasingly urban emphasis in policy documents at both national and provincial level. The sense is one of impending crisis, with the realisation that rapid urbanisation also raises issues of adequate food supply, affordable shelter, employment opportunities, water and waste management, public transportation, crime and disease, and environmental degradation and climate change. These challenges intertwine with critical social processes such as exclusion and conflict, which require effective socio-political management institutions and processes. Achieving well governed and sustainable cities is becoming increasingly important to the future health of the planet. And yet most policy ‘solutions’ continue to be generated by the large aid and development agencies of the global North, with a generally poor track-record of successful interventions in the very different context of Africa and the global South. The central objective of the African Centre for Cities is to provide a base from which critique and alternatives in relation to urban issues can be launched. In Africa, South Africa and across UCT, urban-related research is highly fragmented. The aims of the Centre are therefore two-fold to partner closely with policy-making centres in the public sector in South Africa (national, provincial, local) and subsequently more widely to provide an alternative perspective on dealing with critical urban issues; secondly to provide an intellectual base and home for interdisciplinary, urban-related research at UCT, from which relations can be established with selected international funders and think-tanks.

| The MOOC is now open!

💡 Food insecurity has traditionally been viewed as a rural challenge, with this perspective still informing food policy and security responses. The 'What can food tell us about African cities' MOOC uses the lens of food to help participants make sense of African cities.

Convened by Jane Battersby, this course unpacks the important role that the informal economy plays in enabling greater urban access to food, and highlights the nimble, imaginative ideas lower-income residents leverage to circumvent the constraints of living in informal contexts.

🎤 PODCAST | From Apartheid to Agency; Africa's Urban Future

- As cities worldwide reflect on their futures today, the message is clear: Africa’s urban story is central to the global story, and it’s one of agency, innovation, and hope.

ACC Director, Edgar Pieterse recently featured on an episode of , where he takes listeners on a sweeping journey through apartheid-era Cape Town to a hopeful, youth-driven African future.

Edgar explores the next frontier of global transformation, where African creativity, culture, and courage redefine the future. He explains why the urban and climate agendas are inextricably linked, how the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative is transforming city governance, and why the coming decades will require new forms of imagination, collaboration, and infrastructure.

EVENT | Launch of the Demonstrator at

💡 In Cape Town this weekend? Join us this Sunday at for the public launch of the Demonstrator at 16 on Lerotholi Gallery.

Over the past two months, local constructors have been hard at work bringing this innovative project to life — a hands-on showcase of alternative building materials in action. The deck has been a source of conversation among gallery visitors, the community and academic community alike.

The ReBuilt Demonstrator is both structure and statement. It is a living prototype for regenerative design and urban innovation. Developed through a research-led, collaborative design process, it showcases how sustainable materials, circular building systems, and community co-creation can advance more inclusive and ecological urban futures.

The launch will include a brief walk-through of the Demonstrator followed by an informal celebratory networking session to explore how such initiatives can act as testbeds for innovation, community engagement, and regenerative urban development across Cape Town and beyond.

| 🌍 Celebrating Global Collaboration at ACC

The Vice President of the DAAD, Dr. Muriel Helbig, recently visited Cape Town and the ACC as part of the organisation’s 100th anniversary celebrations, highlighting global cooperation in a multipolar world. Since 2024, the DAAD South Africa has offered comprehensive In-Region Scholarships to students pursuing their MPhil in Urban Studies – Southern Urbanism at the ACC. This scholarship has benefited eight students from the sub-Saharan Africa region.

The DAAD delegation was welcomed by Prof. Andrew Tucker(ACC Deputy Director), Dr. Anna Selmeczi (MPhil Course Convener), and Dr. Quinton Johnson (Director: UCT International Office)..

Remarking on the diversity of backgrounds in the MPhil programme, Dr. Helbig noted the value of internationalisation. Indeed, a pan-African orientation is central to the programme. Along with the carefully curated coursework material, students’ experiences are invaluable to the pedagogical journey. The visit also provided students with an opportunity to share their experiences of the programme with the funder.

We look forward to welcoming the DAAD delegation back to the ACC in the future.
