Makaton South Africa Autism South Africa

The Autism World has woken up to very sad news this morning. One of our mentors, coaches, and a strong advocate for autism education, Maggi Golding passed away last night. Maggi was involved in founding the first autism schools in South Africa, bought both TEACCH and Makaton to South Africa. Without Maggi we would not where we are today with education for autistic learners. We thank you Maggi for your passion and dedication to the autism community. You will be missed by us all.

Sometimes typical toddler behavior can be an indicator that they’re dealing with something more.
After the age of two, toddlers are testing their boundaries, experimenting with their independence, and often experiencing big emotions they don’t quite know how to process yet.
Because young children haven’t learned how to regulate their emotions yet, and often don’t have the vocabulary to express those emotions, they resort to acting out instead.

The experts from the Care2Kids team at the IPW can help children learn coping skills and appropriate ways to manage big feelings. Parents can also work with the therapists to gain additional skills to help their child be more successful.

After being out for a few hours on Sunday I headed home. When I arrived at my front door, the key snapped in the lock and I was left with the head of the key in my hand and broken key stuck in the lock.
I phoned a locksmith and they said they’d be with me in 20 minutes, sure enough 20 minutes later they arrived. I expected a long complex procedure to replace the lock, and a huge bill. However, 5 minutes later and bill paid, I was stood in my living room.
On reflection, when I was thinking about how complex I thought his task might be, I hadn’t taken into account that he had a) the correct tools for the job b) training and c) experience. If I had tried to this on my own, I suspect that it would have taken me much longer with a far less positive outcome. This is because, although I have a lot of experience opening doors, I don’t have any in fixing locks, I don’t have the tools and I definitely haven’t been trained.
When we support people, we need to acknowledge that no one has the ability to solve every problem, sometimes it takes people with expertise, training and experience of similar problems to enable appropriate solutions. When we deliver training, part of our process is to recognise the skills people have and utilise them in the most positive manner.
