Understanding the first principles of production will help you make informed decisions, giving you that extra edge, especially when your filmmaking becomes competitive and your livelihood.
Anyone can plug in a microphone, switch on a light, turn on a camera and film, but…and a big but, will the product be professional by industry standards.
For instance:
knowing which microphone to choose for the job, and then what is the best placement and why?...... and what are sound waves?
which light, and why does light behave the way it does?
which filters do what… and why?
what is the best camera setting for the shot…?
And what really is exposure?
and so, it goes on.
We jump onto a beam of light, study it and follow its path through the lens, the window to the cinematography world.
We study the very nature of light and how light behaves and influences the scene or subject,
we dive into the lens – how it is constructed and how it affects the light which enters it,
and why choosing the correct lens is of paramount importance.
Once light leaves the lens, it enters the camera where it is processed and manipulated through the myriad of menu setting and external functions.
Which are the most important settings common to all cameras?
How do these setting relate to light and lenses?
To help you evaluate your progress, I will give you common first year exam questions and answers, which relate to the content of this course and the many learning institutions out there.
