Associate Professor Greg Distiller, a seasoned academic, has dedicated his career to exploring the vast potential of statistics, obtaining all his degrees from the University of Cape Town. After earning a Business Science degree with honors in marketing in 1995, he shifted his focus to statistics, eventually completing his PhD in 2016. “I didn’t plan on ending up in academia,” he admits, “but it became an option while doing postgraduate studies.”

Greg emphasizes the diverse applications of statistics, noting, “What most people do not realize is just how broad the application of statistics is, and so one can really go into whatever domain is appealing.” His current research focuses on the design of spatial capture-recapture surveys, a field ripe with real-world applications.

Beyond academia, Greg enjoys hiking, reading, gaming, golf, and watching sports. Within the UCT Department of Statistical Sciences, he values the range of different interests and personalities of his colleagues.
