Occupational Certificate (OC) Chef Year 2 Students Explore Environmental Sustainability at Hotel Verde.
OC Chef students recently had the opportunity to experience environmental sustainability in action during the site visit/ eco-tour at Hotel Verde, guided by Executive Chef Adriaan.
As part of their Environmental Awareness and Sustainability modules, students explored the hotel’s innovative green initiatives, including wind turbines, solar energy, aquaponics and hydroponic systems, gardens, greywater tanks and waste-reduction practices.
The visit also highlighted sustainable procurement, responsible sourcing, food miles, upcycled materials and the use of electric vehicles. Students saw how sustainability is put in practice across the hotel β€” from the kitchen and maintenance to energy, water, transport and community engagement.
The eco-tour provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world hospitality practices and demonstrated that sustainability can be part of every aspect of hotel operations.
We sincerely thank Executive Chef Adriaan and the Hotel Verde team for sharing their knowledge and inspiring our students through this practical learning experience.

On 26 August, Dr. Cavin McPherson and Ms. Nobandla Malawu Ntabazalila attended the Elangeni PSET Research Conference held at the Elangeni Coast in Umhlanga. The conference brought together key stakeholders in the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector, including representatives from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), universities, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and other institutions involved in TVET research. This year's theme was Future-Ready Occupational Training and Transformative Skills for Entrepreneurship and Employability: Innovations Shaping South Africa's Workforce of Tomorrow

Dr. Cavin McPherson had the privilege of presenting his research article at the conference, with the intention of having the work considered for publication in the JOVACET peer-reviewed journal. His research interrogates why articulation agreements, despite their prominence in higher education and PSET policy, remain largely unimplemented in public colleges, particularly within occupationally oriented (OC) programmes.

The conference provided both colleagues with a valuable platform to share their work, engage with sector stakeholders, receive constructive feedback, and contribute to ongoing discussions on the advancement of TVET research and practice in South Africa.
