The Department of Geological Sciences hosted a celebratory picnic at Arderne Gardens, Claremont on Friday 23 October. The occasion was to celebrate the successful completion of a PhD by Mieng Abrahams, nGAP lecturer in our department. The organiser of the event, Emese Bordy , was Mieng’s supervisor. She also supervised Claire Geel's PhD; Mieng and Claire will graduate together in December during a virtual UCT event.

Arderne Gardens was established in the 1845 by, surprise, surprise, Mr Ralph Arderne. It is home to the most amazing collection of very old and majestic trees and was an entirely appropriate venue for the occasion. In this picture, we see Emese, Robert Morrell, Chris Harris (HoD), Alastair Sloan (right) and Mieng herself among her postgrad peers.
