A warm welcome and heartfelt goodbye to our intern from the UK, Douglas Leung ❤️😢

Douglas joined us for a 4-week internship from the UK, where he recently finished the Bar Course for aspiring barristers (advocates) at City Law School, London.

Mr. Leung brought a fresh energy and enthusiasm to the Clinic and broader UCT community. His eagerness to learn about our country, the Clinic, our University and our legal system allowed him to seamlessly integrate into his new environment.

Douglas' work at the UCT Law Clinic included drafting legal documents, consulting with clients, attending satellite Clinics and shadowing attorneys and advocates at the Magistrates’ and High Courts.

Outside of his legal work, Douglas made the most of his time in Cape Town. He enjoyed exploring the beautiful nature (including the penguins!), hiking, salsa dancing, playing football and sampling local cuisine and wine.

A special thank you to the learned Advocate David Van Der Linde for allowing Douglas to accompany him to the Western Cape High Court and for taking the time to share his knowledge and experience as an advocate with Mr. Leung.

We are grateful to Douglas for choosing to be a part of our team for the month of August and hope to meet again ✨

🌟 Exciting times ahead for second semester Legal Practice students! 🌟

On July 28th, 2025, we kicked off the second semester with a bang. Our director, Mrs. Zaida Essop, welcomed the new cohort of 40 Legal Practice students to the course and lectured them on client consultations and the importance of access to justice in our communities.

At the UCT Law Clinic, we are deeply committed to providing free legal services to marginalized communities, and our Legal Practice students are right at the heart of this mission. These students don’t just learn theory—they roll up their sleeves and get real, hands-on experience. Every month, they head out into the communities, consulting with clients, and making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

We can already feel the positive energy this group is bringing, and we are beyond thrilled to watch them grow, learn, and play an integral role in promoting access to justice and social responsiveness. Together, we’re shaping the future of law—one consultation at a time.

We can’t wait to see the difference these passionate and driven students will make as they embark on their journey of justice and impact. Here’s to a year of growth, learning, and making a real change! ⚖️✨
