𝐃𝐔𝐓 𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐍 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐋𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭

The Durban University of Technology (DUT)’s International Centre of Non-Violence (ICON) will this morning return to the Mellowood Community Hall in Shakaskraal, within the iLembe District Municipality, for the second day of its school engagement programme focused on addressing violence.

Day one of the initiative saw more than 20 schools participating in meaningful discussions aimed at promoting peace, awareness, and non-violence among young people.

𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 & 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐚 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Our 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 students recently participated in the prestigious Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026, held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (commonly known as the Durban ICC), where they played a vital support role in ensuring the smooth delivery of Africa’s leading tourism trade showcase.

The students were deployed across key operational areas:

• 𝑺𝒚𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 (𝑶𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎): 30 Advanced Diploma students supported administration, registration, information, and media functions.
• 𝑰𝑻𝑬𝑴 (𝑹𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎): 74 Diploma students assisted with registrations, buyer-seller connections, scanning, and overall delegate coordination.
• 𝑻𝑲𝒁𝑵 & 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒎 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚: 5 Postgraduate Diploma students served as Tourism Ambassadors, representing the sector with professionalism and pride.

Across all teams, students demonstrated exceptional discipline, commitment, and professionalism, playing a meaningful role in the success of the event.

A special student awarding and appreciation ceremony was hosted in collaboration with DUT staff, South African Tourism, Synergy, and ITEM at the Durban ICC South Foyer. The moment was made even more significant as it took place on the same stage where the official opening of the Indaba was declared.

The DUT Faculty of Management Sciences Communications Team, proud products of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Journalism Programme, extends heartfelt congratulations to 𝐌𝐬 𝐌𝐩𝐡𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐞, Technical Assistant within the programme, who was this morning awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration. She pursued her studies through the DUT Business School, which falls within the ambit of the faculty.

Throughout the years, Ms Matibe has played an invaluable role in supporting Journalism students behind the scenes. From ensuring that camera equipment, video editing suites, and other technical resources were always available, to assisting students as they navigated the demands of a highly practical and creativity-driven programme, she was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Her dedication, professionalism, and willingness to support both staff and students have left a lasting impact on many aspiring journalists and communicators who passed through the programme.

𝐅𝐌𝐒 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐒 𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐑 𝐀𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐂𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐂 𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐒 𝐀 𝐏𝐇𝐃 🎓

Congratulations to 𝐃𝐫 𝐙𝐢𝐤𝐡𝐨 𝐐𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐚, a lecturer in our Department of Ecotourism, who was conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Management Sciences Specialising in Hospitality and Tourism.

She was the first graduate to walk across the stage as the Durban University of Technology (DUT)’s DUT Faculty of Management Sciences ' (FMS) Autumn Graduation ceremonies kicked off in Pietermaritzburg on 12 May 2026.

The title of her thesis is “𝑨 𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒎𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔.”

This study explored how collaborative governance in protected areas can better balance biodiversity conservation with the livelihood needs of surrounding communities. Using a qualitative approach, the research gathered insights from conservation authorities, local communities, and governance stakeholders through interviews, focus groups, and document analysis.

The findings showed that although collaborative governance can improve conservation efforts and create socio-economic benefits, challenges such as unequal power relations, limited community participation, weak institutional capacity, and poor policy implementation reduce its effectiveness.

The study developed a framework that combines collaborative governance and social-ecological systems perspectives to strengthen institutional structures, encourage inclusive participation, and promote fair benefit-sharing. Overall, the research emphasises the need for adaptive and inclusive governance to ensure sustainable protected area management and improved community livelihoods.

𝐃𝐫 𝐍𝐒 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢 was the research supervisor.

We are incredibly proud of her outstanding achievement and the dedication she has shown throughout her doctoral journey. Her journey also included the honour of representing South Africa at the 8th Annual BRICS Expert Council International School in Moscow, Russia.

If you ever drop her an email or give her a call and don’t get an instant response, just know she’s either on leave or a horrible monster has kidnapped her because her professionalism and efficiency are truly on another level.

We extend heartfelt congratulations to 𝐌𝐫𝐬 𝐄𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, the dedicated secretary in our Department of Applied Management at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Riverside Campus in Pietermaritzburg.

She has successfully achieved her Diploma in Management Sciences: Public Relations and Communication Management, marking an extraordinary milestone after 35 years of outstanding service. 𝐌𝐫𝐬 𝐆𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 joined DUT in June 1991, initially based in Durban, before relocating to the Riverside Campus in Pietermaritzburg in September 1998, where she has continued to serve with unwavering commitment and excellence ever since.

“I was inspired to further my studies later in life after working many years at DUT and after dedicating myself to raising my children as a single parent. For a long time, my priority was my children, which meant I did not have the opportunity to pursue my own academic goals. Now that my children are grown and independent, I felt it was time to invest in myself and achieve a personal goal that I had put aside for many years. This journey was more about personal achievement, and proving to myself that I could do it as I am almost at retirement age,” she shared.
