𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀! 🏆

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our top-performing students from the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 in the Midlands (Riverside Campus), led by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢 𝐈. 𝐃𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢, who were recognised and celebrated yesterday at the Department’s 2026 Students’ Excellence Awards Ceremony, held at the Golden Horse Casino & Hotel in Pietermaritzburg.

The ceremony provided an opportunity for the Department to acknowledge and honour students who demonstrated outstanding academic performance, dedication, commitment and excellence throughout the academic year.

The event brought together students, academic staff, university management and other stakeholders, creating an atmosphere of celebration and pride as students were recognised for their remarkable achievements.

#𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 are for a little reflection and appreciation for the amazing people whose guest insights add value to our curriculum.

We extend a huge thank you to 𝐌𝐫 𝐌𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢 𝐌𝐤𝐡𝐢𝐳𝐞, a Marketing and Public Relations Executive Officer at Shelly Beach Hospital, who recently visited our Department of Public Relations Management to deliver a guest lecture titled “𝑫𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝑨𝒈𝒆.”

The guest lecture formed part of Society and the Media 102 (SOCM201), a module taught by Dr Nisha Ramlutchman.

Mr Mkhize’s lecture offered a thought-provoking exploration of how social media algorithms are quietly reshaping the way society understands health and mental health. He highlighted how short-form media platforms can reduce complex issues, such as emotional regulation, into 15-second “life hacks”, rewarding engagement and sensationalism over scientific evidence and clinical nuance.

Using the viral Ashwagandha emotional numbing trend as a case study, Mr Mkhize demonstrated how a product traditionally associated with stress resilience can be rebranded online as an emotional “off switch”. When engagement metrics determine what gains visibility, everyday experiences such as stress and burnout can easily be appropriated as evidence of a product’s effectiveness, contributing to what he referred to as diagnostic drift.

Our Department of Public Relations Management was delighted to welcome Ms Khethukuthula Xulu Malembethe, Marketing and Communications Coordinator at WILDTRUST, who engaged first-year Public Relations students at the DUT ML Sultan Campus on Monday, 03 August 2026.

Drawing on more than a decade of experience in journalism, including her role as Deputy News Editor at The Witness, Ms Malembethe presented an inspiring session titled " 𝑵𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝑷𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆."

She shared how her journey from journalism to strategic communication has shaped her expertise in media relations, stakeholder engagement and reputation management. A proud DUT alumna, she holds a BTech in Journalism and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations and Communication Management.

Through her engaging presentation, students were reminded that Public Relations is about so much more than writing press releases or promoting organisations. It is about building meaningful relationships, managing reputation, fostering trust, telling authentic stories and communicating responsibly before, during and after a crisis.

𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒂 𝒅𝒖𝒍𝒍 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝑼𝑻 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑺𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔! Earlier this week, the DUT International Centre of Non-Violence (ICON), in collaboration with the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Gandhi-Montessori-Luthuli Chair of Education for Peace and Transformative Solidarity, held a workshop training justice and peace community champions to promote human rights, social and environmental justice in their respective communities.

The two-day event was held at the DUT ML Sultan Campus, in the ICON Seminar Room, and was led by UNESCO Gandhi-Montessori-Luthuli Co-Chair and Associate Professor at DUT ICON, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐚𝐬 𝐄𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐠. It brought together about 16 community leaders from various communities in and around the eThekwini Municipality to capacitate them to drive change and transformation on issues of human rights, social justice and environmental justice in their respective communities.

The programme commenced with welcome remarks by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐝𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐨 𝐍𝐠𝐢𝐝𝐢, the Director of DUT ICON.
