From Classroom to Industry: DUT Students Tackle Real Engineering Challenges at Dube TradePort
Engineering Work Systems III exit-level students at Durban University of Technology recently traded theory for real-world practice through an industry-based project at Dube TradePort.
Designed around ECSA Graduate Attribute 7 (Sustainability and Impact of Engineering Activity), the project took students beyond textbook case studies into live industrial systems — including the Cargo Terminal ETV system, cargo-handling bridge operations, the AgriZone laboratory HVAC positive-pressure system, and HVAC at the 29° South Building.
Working in groups, students observed operations, engaged with industry representatives, and applied Industrial Engineering principles to analyse each system — not just for technical performance, but for its impact on efficiency, energy use, environmental sustainability, safety, economics, and people.
The experience marked a shift from learning engineering concepts to practising them: investigating real problems with no textbook answers and developing sustainable, practical recommendations.
The takeaway for students was clear — engineering isn't only about solving problems. It's about understanding the impact of the solutions we create.

Hester Jackson, Ranil Singh, Andrew Naicker, Mendon Dewa and Oludolapo Olanrewaju Menzi Mncwango, Joachim Günther, Prof. Dr.-Ing. from Munich came for a visit to DUT. we had many interesting lectures with Prof Joachim in our classrooms. there is also at least one coil project in the making.

Sharing preliminary insights from an Industrial Engineering alumni survey at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). These visuals reflect self-reported responses from alumni across multiple graduation eras, illustrating qualification pathways, employment relevance, and the diverse industries in which graduates are active. While the findings are preliminary and will be refined through deeper analysis, they already highlight the continued relevance of both legacy and restructured Industrial Engineering qualifications, as well as strong alignment between academic preparation and workplace roles. Alumni feedback plays an important role in shaping curriculum development, graduate support, and future engagement initiatives, and we thank all respondents who contributed to this ongoing process.
