The Urban Futures Centre at the Durban University of Technology (UFC@DUT) is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. The UFC@DUT is an interdisciplinary laboratory that not only builds theory, but also tests out ideas and interventions in ways that are not prescribed and determined by dominant stakeholders, be they government officials, academics or large social movements. The U

FC@DUT seeks to find new solutions to problems, and to do so in collaboration with those most affected by the complexities that characterise urban spaces. The UFC@DUT serves as the central node for a network of projects, institutions, practitioners and academics interested in the future of cities locally (in Durban and South Africa) and globally. It currently houses a set of local and international research collaboration projects, including two community engagement projects. Underpinning the workings and activities of the centre is a concern with the real people who live in cities, and their futures. Focusing on quality of urban life, the UFC@DUT utilises university capacity and resources to design sustainable urban solutions to everyday problems. Imagining urban futures raises questions on the types of thinking and practices required to make cities great places to live in. Integrating intellectual, theoretical, practical and community resources the UFC@DUT aims to build an interdisciplinary knowledge network, encourage processes of innovation and imagination, and engage urban problems and solutions through a systems approach. The UFC@DUT is a space of engagement and deliberation, which takes place through a weekly seminar programme as well as organised public debates. As of Mid-2015, a Masters and Doctorate of Built Environment (by dissertation) will be offered.

The WZW composting pilot team and eThekwini officials from the Business Support, Markets, Tourism and Agribusiness Unit (BSMTAU), the Cleansing and Solid Waste (CSW) Unit, and the Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Unit went on a tour of different composting and recycling sites in the Western Cape. On day one they were greeted in the Cape Agulhas Municipality to kick off the learning exchange. Interesting presentations and site visits to see composting in action filled up the week and inspired the team with enthusiasm and knowledge. The network and collaborative approach to reducing methane emissions in Durban is further strengthened by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the city to scale up the project's composting operations. groundWork has published an article with the details of the municipal learning exchange and MOU. The conditions under which waste pickers work often pose a risk to their health and safety. These stem from a number of factors; including a lack of access to clean water, as well as unsorted and contaminated materials that they handle in landfills and on the streets.

Last week, the (WZW) project team took a caring step towards decreasing these risks, by distributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to waste pickers who are working at the Palmer Street Recycling Facility, and in the Mayville area.

Halala WZW team for playing a part in creating better working conditions for local waste pickers!

On the 24th of November, the Durban North PWUD Network in collaboration with South African Network of People Who Use Drugs - Sanpud, Urban Futures Centre, TB HIV Care, and Siphila Ngomusa hosted the Launch Event.

The organising team planned to screen a variety of films based on the topic, followed by discussions led by knowledgable GBV activists and allies, but were unfortunately not able to proceed with this programming due to rolling power cuts in the area. Despite this disruption, the organising team and participants powered through. The invited speakers presented a short summary of the films that were going to be screened, and offered lessons that could be drawn from each one through an interactive discussion with the event attendees. The topics of discussion sparked generative debate amongst the beneficiaries of the Centre and resulted in a better understanding amongst the group, particularly those who identify as male, around how gender informs the root, perpetuation and experience of violence in our society.

The event provided a much needed opportunity for many to learn and form new perspectives around Gender Based Violence. It also affirmed Centre’s identity and ethos, as a safe and non-judgmental space where people from all walks of life can come together to speak openly and intentionally about oft times uncomfortable and divisive topics. The launch ended on a positive note, with food and drinks for all. A big thank you is extended to Simisa Klaas and Nathi, and especially the TB HIV Care team who did a fantastic job of working through the challenges posed on the day to ensure the spirit of the programme was realised.

EXCITING NEW READ!

The (WZW) team’s report on its diversion and composting pilot at Durban Botanic Gardens is now available on the website!

“Cost-benefit Analysis of the Early Morning Market Composting Pilot Project at the Durban Botanic Gardens” draws on research data collected over 3 years, to illustrate the feasibility of a small municipal-run decentralised model that composts organic waste within a 2km radius from where it is discarded.

The report highlights the economic and environmental benefits that flow out of diverting waste from landfills (one of the most significant contributors to methane gas emissions, and by extension global warming), and creating compost. The trifactoral gains for the municipality, the environment and people is inspiring!

CALL FOR SESSION PROPOSALS: AFRICAN URBANISMS CONFERENCE

Wits-TUB Urban Lab will be hosting the “African Urbanisms” conference at Wits - University of the Witwatersrand from October 23 to 26 2024. The call for session proposals is now open! Potential session organisers are invited to submit their proposals under the conference’s three thematic streams (Critical Engagements, Transformative Practices, Alternative Futures) that initiate discussions that contribute to advance the respective discourse.

Proposal Submission Deadline: 21 January 2024
Conference Concept Note: https://bit.ly/African-Urbanisms-Concept-Note
Session Proposal Preparation Guide: https://bit.ly/African-Urbanisms-Session-Proposal-Guide
Session Proposal Template: https://bit.ly/African-Urbanisms-Session-Proposal-Template

Conference Details:
The Wits-TUB Urban Lab is organising the conference. The project is collaboration between Wits University - School of Architecture and Planning, Technische Universität Berlin Habitat Unit (Institute of Architecture) and Centre for Housing Studies, Unilag, focusing on graduate education in the urban disciplines across the African continent funded by DAAD / Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ).

The conference will be hosted by the Wits University - School of Architecture and Planning on Wits - University of the Witwatersrand's East Campus, Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The conference will be in-person and participation will be free of charge. Each paper session will be 90 minutes long, 30 minutes should be reserved for discussion.

Conference Theme:
The conference explores the multiplicity of interlinked African urbanisms, as a starting point to question the status quo of urban policies and planning paradigms - to seek transformative practices that present alternatives to “business as usual” urban development, and to imagine alternative urban futures. Therefore, the conference aims to bring together work at different scales, exploring urbanisation experiences and relating these to each other. This may range from contributions on local phenomena and challenges, work that explores experiences shared across various cities on the continent, to research on the ways in which African urbanisms influence and/or are impacted by the world beyond the continent.

"The Manor House pilot has the potential to showcase how, at a local level, we can actually divert recyclables away from landfill. But also how the collaboration between waste-pickers and residents could actually yield positive results." - Asiphile Khanyile ( Researcher and groundWork UMI Waste Project Campaigner)

Collaborative and innovative strategies for realizing goals at a local level are happening right here, right now in Glenwood, KwaZulu-Natal! Check out this inspiring real-life and real-time exemplar of how waste-pickers and local residents can work together to mitigate climate change, and simultaneously contribute directly to the livelihoods of local waste-pickers.
