DUT Writing Centre

DUT Writing Centre Tutors will guide, advise and support writers, with the aim of developing their skills and confidence.

Durban University of Technology (DUT) has five Writing Centres which are spread across five campuses, namely Steve Biko, ML Sultan and City Campus in Durban, Indumiso and Riverside in Pietermaritzburg. In total, the DUT Writing Centres have recruited and trained 21 tutors who will be ready to assist students and staff with the following:

strategies for writing in different disciplines;
assignment

s for humanities and science-related academic courses;
reading, researching and referencing;
proposals (academic and business);
dissertations;
articles, book chapters and books for publication;
business and professional writing (curriculum vitaes; e-mails, motivational letters, memos, etc);
creative writing;
course syllabi; etc. They will not edit or write for tutees, but will offer collegial support and writing companionship. Tutors will listen and help writers to put together their ideas and thoughts. In all instances, the writer will make the decisions and direct the writing.

Academic Writing is used for school work like essays, research papers, and reports — basically, all the serious and structured writing. It should be formal, so no slang or casual language. Stick to facts and back up your points with proper research. A clear structure is important: start with an introduction, then body paragraphs with your main points, and end with a strong conclusion. Also, don’t forget to give credit when you use someone else’s ideas. Common examples include essays, reports, theses, dissertations, and literature reviews.
