Imagine sitting in a restaurant enjoying your favourite smoothie. Then after that last sip, you carry on and eat your straw. This is exactly the idea behind the new range of “Eat me straws” designed by SU student, Leila Siljeur. This second-year Chemical Engineering student proved that no idea is too small to help a cause you feel passionate about. Moved by a social media post of a sea turtle with a plastic fork stuck in its nose, Leila came up with the idea for a flavoured edible drinking straw, that won’t go soft or sticky halfway through your drink. http://bit.ly/2kisqJZ

Bring us your waste and we’ll give you a thermal mug.
Facilities Management wants to highlight the importance of recycling on our Stellenbosch campus and will be running a Recycling Swop Shop for the next few weeks. Yes, you can swop your recyclable waste for a thermal mug.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
1. Collect and sort your dry recyclables in separate bags (i.e plastics, paper, glass etc).
2. Arrange with Dannica Pedro ([email protected]) at Facilities Management to drop off the bag (s).
3. For every five bags of recyclable waste delivered, you will receive a thermal mug.

Congratulations to SA Reserve BankGovernor Lesetja Kganyago, upon receiving an Honorary Doctorate at .
“For a university to play a meaningful role in transformation, it needs the space to do so. It is thus important for the university community, particularly its students, academic staff and its leadership, to ‘pursue the truth in a manner that is consistent with professional standards of enquiry’ – commonly referred to as academic freedom.
Today we might be taking academic freedom for granted because the constitution guarantees it. But academic freedom in this country is a result of gallant battles wages by men and women who were keen to see the transformation of our country.”

Stellenbosch University continuously strives to make a positive impact on communities through its various social impact and academic programmes. The Young Entrepreneurship Project (YEP) is doing exactly this.
The Kayamandi Vegetable Store Garden (K.V. Store) is an outcome of the YEP by which SU students at our Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences developed course material for an entrepreneurship project aimed at high school learners. The learners taking part in the project had to submit start-up ideas and business plans and the best four ideas won start-up capital of R4000 per group to make their plans a reality.
The K.V Store was one of the winning ideas groups. This group’s idea started with the concerned about their community's health and that they wanted to plant vegetables at school, selling the fresh garden produce at low prices to Kayamandi residents to improve the health of and empower the people of the community.
