Leadership, talent, speed and agility have propelled two Walter Sisulu Sport Management students from the university rugby fields to the international stage.

This after Walter Sisulu All Blacks captain Lukhangele Tshayi and fleet-footed teammate Simthembile Zozi were recently selected to represent South Africa at the FISU World Rugby 7s Championships.

The pair, both third-year Sports Management students, will join the world’s finest university rugby talent at Stellenbosch University from 4 to 6 September, proudly hoisting the Walter Sisulu flag high.

For Walter Sisulu student, Likho Bhixi, victory on the bodybuilding stage is more than a trophy, but rather a tribute to the woman whose unwavering belief, sacrifices, and prayers helped carry him through the difficult days of his journey.

The final-year Diploma in Management student recently emerged victorious at the 2026 International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation South Africa (IFBB SA) competition in Cape Town, securing first place and proudly flying the flag for Walter Sisulu.

Hailing from Kwanikwe Location outside Bizana, Bhixi’s achievement is the culmination of discipline, dedication and an enduring commitment to bodybuilding.

But for the newly crowned champion, the victory belongs to more than just himself.

𝐃𝐑 𝐆𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐎’𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊 𝐅𝐔𝐄𝐋𝐒 𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐏𝐇𝐃 𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓

For Dr Sibukele Gumbo, the road to a PhD has been paved not only by academic rigour, but by countless journeys into some of the Eastern Cape’s most remote communities, where she has worked tirelessly to bring digital skills to people who need them most.

It is this grassroots work, rooted in a commitment to empowering marginalised communities, that has given particular meaning to her recent doctoral achievement.

The Eastern Cape e-Skills CoLab Director recently obtained a PhD in Applied Data Science from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), becoming the first person at Walter Sisulu to hold the qualification.

Her doctoral study, titled “Building Sustainable Models to Deliver Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) Skills”, examined how 4IR skills can be developed and delivered sustainably in resource-constrained environments, using the Eastern Cape as its primary context.

As the upcoming Student Representatives Council elections at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu draw closer, preparations are underway to ensure that students are informed, elections-ready, and able to exercise their right to vote.

The elections are scheduled to take place on 17 and 18 September 2026, providing students with an opportunity to choose representatives who will champion, raise issues affecting their academic experience and welfare.

As part of the preparations, the Student Representatives Council (SRC) will be educating on the voting process including how to address ICT issues while the university is putting measure in place to ensure that all eligible students are able to cast their votes.

𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐌𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲: 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩

iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, in partnership with Kwazithina Publishers, held the inaugural Funda Mpondo Research Day at the Zamukulungisa Site, Mthatha Campus, creating a dedicated platform for African knowledge, stories and indigenous languages to find a formal home in research and scholarship. Under the theme “African Stories in Conversation with the World”, the Research Day brought together researchers, students, writers, artists, storytellers and knowledge holders to explore the richness and significance of African narratives.

The Research Day sought to ensure that African communities are not merely subjects of research but active researchers, knowledge producers and custodians of their own knowledge. It provided space to document, study and preserve knowledge that has traditionally been passed down through generations, while connecting storytelling, research and publishing to create a sustainable ecosystem for African knowledge.

At its heart, the initiative is about turning questions into research, research into publications, and publications into knowledge that can inform policy, education and communities while contributing to global scholarship.
